BACKGROUND/PRESENT
---
One of my favourite quotes by Paul Rand. Design is an array of creativity; a multi-disciplinary subject which offers us mark makers freedom to communicate on a multitude of creative canvases.
Background
.
I love graphic design. I love being a graphic designer. Self-starting and devoted, my day is not complete without a daily dose of visual communication. It truly is my self-confessed obsession.
Being exposed to visual communication throughout life; i never understood what graphic design actually was until i was faced with a choice at secondary school. Even then i assumed graphic design was the method of designing logos. The next time i encountered the subject was on the Art & Design Foundation course at the University of Cumbria; having had several months to cover many areas the course then sub divided. There were several subject areas including: fine art, textiles, 3d design and my chosen area of visual communication. Researching the work of designers; Paul Rand, Josef Müller-Brockmann, Tibor Kalman, David Carson and Neville Brody you can imagine my ore when i discovered this whole new world of visual communication.
After completing the foundation course i decided to further my studies at the University and began the BA (hons) Graphic Design course. The course itself allowed so much creative freedom; a chance not only to explore and become aware of the ground rules of graphic design but also to challenge and push those boundaries. Four years down the line and many sleepless nights of study; i graduated from the University of Cumbria. Since then my passion and enthusiasm for my subject has only grown.
I am a team player and love nothing more than discussing design. Through networking extensively with designers and artists across the world, i have been faced with many fantastic opportunities; collaborating with some amazing talents. Outside my own way of life, working with people from different social and cultural backgrounds, has opened my eyes to the vast world of communication. Culture is not a barrier, nor is language, the fluidity of communication is not through speech alone, but through visual image and expression.
Present
.
To date, i have had my work recognised by designers Scott Hansen (Iso50), Tina Roth Eisenberg (Swissmiss) and Jason Doherty (Ventilate). I have also been lucky enough to have my work selected and published in 'Icons of Graphic Design' by Steven Heller & Mirko Ilic.
I now work as a Junior Graphic Designer at Marker Wallace Limited, a design and marketing agency in Windermere.
I hope you enjoy the website and please feel free to contact me regarding any further information or just to discuss design, all comments are welcome.

Always read the small print:
01. I can spend 12 hours or more a day designing, right into the early hours of the morning; I work at my best at 1 a.m. 02. I always place a sketchbook beside my bed before i go to sleep. If i dream of a concept or even a random thought that could be a good basis for a project - even a composition for a photograph - i have to 'park it.' 03. My work area is covered with yellow sticky notes, full of ideas aching to be put to use. 04. All my books have to be placed on my shelf in size order. 05. I have a folder on my desktop devoted to projects i am eager to self-initiate - i am more than happy creating works and pushing my own personal limits, exploring my on enthusiasm for my subject. 06. When i am out or away from the computer, i can guarantee by the end of the day i will have a list of 'things to do' wrote on the underside of my wrist. How i see it is your wrist will never blow away in the wind, nor get left in your back pocket and be washed! 07. If it is Swiss or Scandinavian design - i love it! 08. I own many bull-dog clips - they are great for keeping bundles of layout paper held together. 09. I work on a Power MAC G5 and would not trade it for the world. 10. I work best to music. 11. The last album i bought was Alphabeat's; This Is Alphabeat. 12. I find driving very relaxing and a great opportunity to listen to music. 13. I am a huge fan of Pixar. 14. I am addicted to design blogs. 15. I would be lying if i said i have never watched SpongeBob. 16. Photography is my moonlighting passion. 17. I am sure this list will grow!

how ar e you?
Balm, Sep 8, 2008:
As many of you already know, on October 19, Balm will open up for "the Boss" at the House of Blues in Chicago! (7:30 PM)
Reaction has been quite enthusiastic to say the least. However the House of Blues is a rather small venue and I want my special friends in the area to be there. So here is the deal: I have reserved 50 free tickets for Zunist! That's right!
All you have to do is to show up with your Zune, show it to the bouncers and say, "I'm a friend of Steve's!" They will usher you to several mid-section tables, all expenses paid (peanuts, chips, sodas, fajitas ... all pre-paid). Be sure to show early on the day of the show, because when the 50 are gone that's it!
Bruce said, "please open up with So Far Away From Home!"
We are gonna' rock the house baby!
