About

SCENERY by Panda of Doom

Out of the ashes of statements such as "rock is dead" and in a music fraternity saturated with hip-hop, kwaito and R&B artists, comes the band SCENERY, a band with a distinctly blue-collar approach to success and a genuine desire to create the best music possible.

Drawing on influences from classically-tinged melody rockers Muse and modern progressive giant Radiohead, SCENERY fuses central themes of melody and groove with Sonic Youth-like white-noise sound-scapes. They are not trying to be different. They are however, an alternative to alternative and have the potential to become a major player in both the punk/rock and pop scenes.

SCENERY, hailing from Pretoria (South Africa) was formed in 1999. As with most bands, their progress was held up by a constant change in their line-up. This was however solidified in the beginning of 2004 when the line-up was finally completed with the current band members. SCENERY is Yorke on lead-vocals & guitar, H on lead guitar & backing vocals, Church on bass guitar and Donnie on drums & backing vocals.

Their distinctive brand of harmony-driven Power-Punk-Rock has not only been making waves in all the right pools lately, but rocking some pretty big boats along the way. Since 2002, they have shared stages with "big-guns" to the likes of Tweak, The Narrow, Prime Circle, Love Jones and Pestroy - and they did not hold back for a second. One might even be tempted to go as far as saying that, as far as bands go, you'd be hard-pressed to find a group of musicians more willing to get their hands dirty and to do it themselves (as they have been doing for the last 5 years).

A conscious decision was made to build a solid fan-base across South Africa, not only thru record and broadcasting media but also through intensive online media campaigns and impressive live performances. It is this attitude that has helped SCENERY to rapidly reach a point of maturity.

The band's inspiration stems from an eclectic array of human, social and cultural interactions. From the characteristics and functioning of the human psyche in every-day life, to the application of music in abstract textured soundscapes.

One could then move on to pointing out that their upcoming, independently released debut album, will be loaded with the kind of infectious foot-tapping that makes you want to turn your stereo all the way up - so that everyone stuck in rush-hour traffic can share in your great taste of music.

The album is set for release in early 2008. SCENERY describes the album to be "too cocky for pop, too much fun for anything else." The band's mission is definitely to expose audiences to a different, more eclectic style of alternative rock and to prove that one can be successful even if your form of expression is radically different from the norm.

SCENERY has stuck together through album delays, dodgy management deals and even dodgier events run by shady characters. They came out a tighter knit team of sincerely nice guys who'd help you push-start your car after the show at the drop of a hat.

We have all heard these claims before but... SCENERY is just about the coolest thing you can do to your ears at the moment.
