As a member of Bonus, Scott Goodwin has served up drones sufficiently beefy and begrimed to be placed on the same menu with SUNN0))) or early Growing. But on his own, he gets back to the source. On Off Light he discards all distortion in favor of a purer sound world that recalls Eliane Radigue’s L’île Re-sonante or Phill Niblock’s Four Full Flutes. Like those albums, the action takes place within a severely concentrated spectrum.
Goodwin constructed the record’s two tracks using sine waves tuned in Just Intonation. His tones are separated by small intervals that induce shifting beat patterns. Despite being bereft of melody or predictable development, this music exerts an extraordinary gravity. Where Niblock’s work really needs high volume and interesting room acoustics to be complete, Goodwin’s seems to reach out and infect the sounds around it with a beating virus, even when played at fairly benign decibel levels; for example, it turned the air rushing out of the heating vent by my desk from an even flow into a stuttering gust and noticeably scrambled the usually steady, damp hum emanating from the toilet next door. Goodwin isn’t so patient as his forebears; although each piece lasts over twenty minutes and confines itself to a narrow tonal range, the changes come quickly, the result of additional auto-panning applied to different tones at different rates that amplify the beating effects. This comparative impetuousness adds considerably to Off Light’s appeal.
