Seafloor

Seafloor is a journal project of musician/producer Sylvia Chen. A continuous effort since 2000, the seafloor style has shifted between and materialized through ambient, drum and bass, down tempo, trip-hop, pop, and classical - with an expanse of influences from classical to dub to jazz to the Carpenters. Throughout all works remains an underlying signature - a feeling of melancholy, the voice used as a texture, simple manipulations and often a hint of the theatrical.

Sylvia is a member of CMYK, formerly known as The Long Ranger, a brother/sister electro-pop monster, and a recording member of Velella Velella, a party evoking dance band armed with vintage analog instruments. Both bands are based in Seattle, WA.

terrifying is ok

A year ago I decided to take a break from the electronic music I had been writing for a decade and performing for the better half of one. I started to find myself at ease, tinkering at my piano (or as close to a piano as I can get) and actually putting an effort into singing. My motivation came from a series of captive experiences watching live, acoustic performances (finally watching, rather than being part of them) and also the memory of me as a teenager late into the night droning on and on at the piano, singing my dear little heart out.

It has been a challenging time. I realize that it is a ridiculous effort to write music that doesn't already sound like another's without submitting to the temptation of layering on the programmed beats and synthesis. Also, the fact that I've had to write lyrics has been at first a dread but eventually, if not unique, something I can live with.

In many ways I feel like I have started over. Clearing out old habits, standard procedure, and all those quick fixes that made producing so damn boring these past couple years. Also, singing has been a painful yet transformative journey. I realize that much of what I'd been doing the past five years hadn't even come close to resonating with who I am or how I feel.

So a few new songs finally, though not what I imagined I'd be writing, making their way to the light.

I was catching up on my pocasts of live performances on KCRW's Morning Becomes Eclectic and was giddy to find a recent
Bat for Lashes performnace. Sadly, for me, I've been relatively unswayed by Natasha Kahn's recent record, mostly due to my own bad listening habits of late. Not really listening because I'm doing something else.
But seeing the band perform live (at least in the studio) killed me. Really. I'm so in the mood to work, refocus and get my own music out.

I recently volunteered to design our poster for Velella Velella's spring tour coming up next month. I only hope that people who make a living doing this, friends included, can forgive me for being a novice.

not too shabby, eh?

Perhaps, by the time I've finished my stint with Velella Velella, made my debut Seafloor album, and worked out a live show, I'll have polished my skills as a designer as well - "here, my cd cover arts; there, my tour posters; on him, my tee shirt."

Yes, and maybe by then I'll have my grand piano, and two babies, and sewing machine, and modern glass, wood house at the edge of the forest overlooking the coast.

Doesn't hurt to have a vision, no? Never.
