About

In the late 90s after the break of the bands The Mushrooms and Medusa 7,Nik Anokhin was involved in video art and the special painting technique known as art casting.

He was invited to take part in the exhibition 'The Abstract Goals", which has brought him to the idea of producing a music accompaniment that would resonate with his artworks. This approach was named the Visual Dub. Finally a few compositions became a base for the first album Ancient EP by the Second Hand Band - a new project. The style of that mini cd is mostly jungle-dub, although the first track Time For Dub sounds more like ambient reggae.

In the spring 2000 Ancient EP is released by American label Monoscript Records and rapidly finds its fame among the connoisseurs of positive vibrations and the fans of horizontal dance. The Second Hand Band that originally was meant to be a studio project starts its concert activity.

During the summer 2000 Nik Anokhin aka Dubchairman meets a musician, sound engineer and an actor Botsman (Igor Gotsmanov) at the 'Cosmos production" studio. The later was known for his participation in the bands 'Wars with salamanders", 'The Avalon", 'The Night Avenue", 'The Intellect Brothers" and also for his roles in the film 'The Shaman" by the French director Bartabas, and as 'Treplev" in Chechov's Chaika staged by Sergey Soloviev.

The summer in the Moscow 's countryside village The White Pillars, accompanied by their families and lots of electronic equipment among the apple trees and the sounds of passing trains gave a result - 9 hours of recorded music. Later on 10 compositions were picked up for a new album Drops by Second Hand Band, that was also released at Monoscript records. This new cd is mainly dub style, but with a hint of trip-hop. As the authors call it - the dub-hope.

In the spring 2002 the bassist Serge 'Rovny" Belyaev ('Moscow Grooves Institute", 'Olf", 'Detsky Panadol") joined the band. And a few months later - the guitarist Nail Kuramshin aka KNR ( 'WK?", 'Detsky panadol", 'Da Buzz" etc).

The new people has changed the sound of the band.

The sample hunter Anokhin(Dubchairman) has taken a guitar in his hands and has created the afrorussian melodic style. Rovny and Nail - has made the groovy pulsating base and the Bozman was in charge for the sound effects. The sound on the whole became more clear and easy but filled with new attitude - ' ... a mix of endless Jamaican joy and boundless Russian sorrow...", as defined by the artist D. Ignatov.

The Band is performing in many Moscow clubs like Propaganda, The Cult, B2, Bunker, Jao Da, Art Garbage, Goa , Yellow Sea , 16 tonns, R&B cafe, etc. It takes part in many festivals: Kazantip, Oriental Music in Krasnogorsk, InStanziya, NuJazzFestival in St. Petersburg , Ahmad Tea in 16 tonns, Fusion-Playboy and many more.

Their next album named Dubbuterfly appears on the Moscow record-label Exotica in 2003.

The message of this album shortly is the following:

A few African tribes use a saying 'Drunk as the butterfly" Most likely this term has originated from the natural observations made by the Africans. A motley butterfly diligently drinks the nectar fluttering from flower to flower and disappears in the sunlight of the early morning.

Dubbutterfly - it is the dub, drunk as a midnight moth, that flies from club to club, diligently drinking and smoking and then disappearing at the break of dawn.

In the year 2004 the SHB starts experimenting with the French rhymes and rhythmic raps by Dasha Rodcher (ex-singer MGI) - some of their tracks were included in the Manga movie soundtrack.

The visual site of the live gigs was supplemented by the mystic videos made by VJ Raduga - Alena Mariashina. Her beautiful shows now take place in many Moscow clubs.

At the same time the band works on the creating soundtracks for films and theater. A few compositions appeared at the soundtracks to the films 'Gololed" (Ice Crusting Ground) 2002, 'The Boomer" (A gangster story about the car stealers) 2003, A TV serial 'Soldiers" 2004, and 'Manga" (A full length film about Russian youth, not to be confused with Japanese cartoons) 2005. The Manga soundtrack was entirely composed and recorded by the Second Hand Band.

In the June 2005 the Finnish theater director Joel Kattinnen introduced his avant -guarde performance Arabian Night in the Moscow art gallery 'Art Strelka" (The Art Point). Music for this performance was composed by Dubchairman and Rovny.

Three members of the SHBand work on their single projects. Dubchairman has released My Planet on Citadel Records in 2004, Rovny has released a few tracks of his project Invisible Kotcheggars on Shum Records collections, Nail works on his KNR single.

In 2005 another Detsky Panadol member has joined the band. The lead singer and the songs writer, Aura starts collaborating with the SHB. Together they accomplish the work on another album Nightingale in a town that is released on Citadel records in December 2005.

It's a mix of transcendental lyrics and ambient rhythms. A relaxing and deep meditative experience. The base for this artwork is the soundtrack for another film The Palm Reader by Anton Bormatov, a talented Russian film and music video director. The SHB have composed a beautiful soundtrack for his mystic serial about a guy who learns palm-reading and gets into various troubles because of that. But producers of the film didn't find the music good and decided not to pay attention to it (along with the money). But nothing is in vain - the music that has never touched the film tape was utilized for the new album by SHB. Along with Aura's texts music has found new life, becoming the Nightingale in A Town.

The first live gig introducing this material was given in the Yellow Sea club in Moscow . And shortly afterwards, the SHB made their first European gig in the legendary Cafe Del Mar in Spain . It was a part of the international Lounge music Festival held by Cafe Del Mar in many countries, In 2005 the prize was won by the Second Hand Band, named the Best Lounge Band in Russia. But the SHB themselves describe their style more as ambient dub and trip hop.
The new album Nightingale In A Town is released on Citadel Records in December 2005. It's the 4 th album by the Second Hand Band.
