serge Tebu

Afro-Jazz musician and composer, Serge Tebu cut his musical teeth in his home town of Douala in the Cameroon and it all started with a saxophone and a very frightened chicken! For Serge's father, who worked at the local Railway Company, had chosen the saxophone as a surprise Christmas gift for his five-year old son, who immediately decided it was best employed as a weapon for dealing with the annoying local poultry. It was with some prescience that Serge's mother warned him to take care of the instrument, as he might regret destroying it in later life. The young Serge was, however, much more interested in football, yet he did reveal early musical tendencies as he drummed out the rhythms of his parents' record collection on various items of furniture, whilst inadvertently becoming familiar with such great talents as Manu Dbango and Wilson Picket. He was around nine when he showed enough interest to use his own money to buy toy instruments and start to explore music for real. An older friend introduced him to his first music teacher, who taught him how to read the dots in exchange for help with the housework, and he has never looked back. By the time he was eighteen, Serge had found a musical mentor in jazz bass player Zebson Pindy, with whom he studied for four years. It was through his work with Pindy that Serge came to spend the next three years teaching at the Zebson Jazz Academy in Douala and co-managing the academic programme. Serge then spent several years producing annual college band concerts and shows with professional musicians, such as Pierre Tchana, the King of Cameroonian Salsa and French chanson practitioner, Otou Marcellin. In 2003 he also set up a studio in Douala, where he composed and arranged music and sound effects for other musicians. Meanwhile, alongside his musical career, Serge had become fascinated with history of own heritage - the Bamileke tribe of the Cameroon. He had joined a research organization called Poola'a, which translated means Song of the Village. It was through this work that Serge was asked to re-master a UK- produced album from political singer-songwriter, Emmanuel Kemta. Unfortunately this association with political activism drew unwelcome attention from Cameroonian Government officials and led to Serge having to flee his native country. Serge arrived in Oldham, near Manchester, at the end of 2006, armed with an old guitar - a gift from Emmanuel Kemta. As a bass player Serge removed the two upper strings, but despite this, he made his UK debut at a concert for International Mother Language Day at Oldham Library and found out about the Exodus programme for refugee artists run by Community Arts North West. He enrolled on a six month training course for community artists and subsequently worked on the city's Urban Music Theatre Project for young people. Since then, Serge Tebu has been fully involved in the Manchester music scene, participating in events such as Manchester Jazz Festival with Mike Wilson,Not Part Of festival with his own band KOKORIKO,Exodus Live and Exodus Festival and becoming an integral part of the Beating Wing Orchestra, a unique band created for the inaugural and highly successful Manchester International Festival, under the direction of the renowned Palestinian singer Reem Kelani. Serge runs his own band which combines African melodies and rhythms with jazz harmonies. And what is the name of this band? Kokoriko - which is Doualan for the sound a chicken makes - so maybe that saxophone was highly significant after all! Serge is currently working on an autobiographical multi-media theatre project and a project called Broken Barriers which combines different musical genres.
