Death to the ROFLcopter!!

roflcopter

It was only three small years ago that I was horrified to hear the internet only word lol spoken in the world outside my computer. The thought of someone being that geeky was just mind blowing. Back then I knew many people whom were obsessed with their computers, but none had ever had the courage or the will to speak out what they were writing. That day was the beginning of the end...

Well, today is the future and it seems as though the new generation of 12 year old geeks have settled quite nicely into this new 1337 sensation. Just walking around a normal schoolyard prompts your able to listen into at least one of the youngsters to be talking about anything from WOW (world of warcraft) to the latest flash game. Worse is that they have also extended their 1337 vocal skills into using some other abbreviations such as rofl (rolling on floor laughing: pronounced roffle) and brb (be right back). Looks like things have really changed in 3 years...

In protest, and to get out of a personal addiction, a few weeks ago I decided that I would attempt to lose as many of the abbreviations as possible from all my conversations on the internet. This includes everything from instant messenger chats (MSN, IRC, Google Talk, etc), social media websites (VIRB.... stuff the rest...) and blog posting. I'd like to find myself making a difference to the blog community, but there's going to be a good chance that it isn't happen. All I can ask of my readers is that you take it into consideration to try this out yourself.

So far in the last month or so I've been able to eliminate words such as brb, wtf (what the ...), rofl, atm (at the moment), omg (oh my goodness), and many more. The only major ones that are still lingering around internet vocabulary are items such as lol (laugh out loud), hehe, haha, hoho (oh, sorry, this has been banned in public places in Brisbane...) and a small range of smilies.

One last tip that I have found quite useful to continuing my usual conversations is to have a dictionary next to your computer. All I've needed to do is open it up to a random page and attempt to use as many of the words in that page in the one conversation. It makes for quite a entertaining conversations!!!

Good luck soldiers, and don't forget that the ROFLcopter and co are not to be underestimated ever!!!
