John Graduates, Benefit Show and Merch Sale!

A few words from John May 24, 2007 I was the last Shapiro member still in school, that is, until this past Sunday, when I graduated cum laude from Bridgewater College with a B.A. in English. I have no job or graduate school plans at this point. My plan right now is to play rock music, and to get various odd jobs to fill in the gaps between recording and touring. Many people ask me what I will be doing now that I've finished school. Surprisingly, my response, "I'm playing in a local rock'n'roll band", doesn't usually have the same positive effect on people's expectations for me as it does on my own expectations for myself. The general skepticism I encountered got me thinking. Why do I have to get a "real" job now? What's so wrong with playing music, albeit just scraping by financially, as long as I'm happy with that lifestyle? My college degree is not going to disappear; there's no reason that I have to start using it immediately. Jobs will always be there. So will graduate school. What will not always be there is the opportunity to drive around playing music with a bunch of guys I love. I have no doubt that sometime in my future I will be writing more thesis papers on Shakespeare. But today I got a job picking strawberries for a local farmer. It's just a little something to hold me over until Shapiro goes back to Nashville to finish recording. I couldn't be happier.
