It is well known that the principle of the undisturbed superposition of oscillatory motions holds only on the supposition that the motions are small, -so small, indeed, that the moving forces excited by the mutual displacements of the particles of the oscillating meduim should be sensibly proportional to these displacements. Now it may be shown that combinational tones must arise whenever the vibrations are so large that the square of the displacements has a sensible influence on the motions.
Es ist weithin bekannt, daß die Grundregel des unbeeinträchtigten Superposition von Schwingungsbewegungen nur auf der Vermutung, daß die Bewegungen klein sind, - so klein in der Tat hält daß die beweglichen Kräfte, die durch die gegenseitigen Versetzungen der Partikel des oszillierenden meduim aufgeregt werden, zu diesen Versetzungen vernünftig proportional sein sollten. Jetzt kann es gezeigt werden daß Kombinationstöne müssen entstehen, wann immer die Erschütterungen so groß sind, daß das Quadrat der Versetzungen einen vernünftigen Einfluß auf die Bewegungen hat.
