Sojourn Music

New songs for worship, rich in Christian theology. Contemporary hymns, psalms, songs of lament and praise written and performed by members of the Louisville, KY-based Sojourn Community.

Chord charts, lyrics, mp3s and more available at www.sojournmusic.com. Select mp3s for each of our five CDs available right here.

Since our inception in 2000, Sojourn has embraced the arts and provided a home for musicians, writers, film-makers and artists of all stripes. This site features the original music of Sojourn's worship band, indigenous music birthed in community and drawing from many music traditions -- music for congregational singing and personal contemplation, for lament and struggle, for discovery and joy, for praise and dialogue with our great God.

Our hope and desire for the universal body of Christ is a reinvigorated emphasis on music for worship and a return to the importance in which music was held by the people of God, who strove to create theologically-sound, thought-provoking and musically compelling songs to (and about) our Lord. To this end, we pray that Christians and churches everywhere will benefit from these songs, but also that they will "go and do the same," learning the value of nurturing and raising up songwriters and musicians to create music for their own communities, glorifying God out of their own culture and speaking through the experiences of their own congregation.

Sojourn Music is an extension of the worship arts ministry of Louisville, KY's Sojourn Community Church. Located in the historic Germantown neighborhood, Sojourn is a community of Christians birthed out of the marginalized culture at the heart of Louisville's artistic center. We host an annual film festival as well as local and nationally-touring graphic art exhibits in our 57,000 square foot community center, The 930, and a concert series that has featured artists like Over The Rhine, the California Guitar Trio, the Greencards, Bill Frisell and founding member of The Jayhawks, Mark Olsen, with upcoming appearances by My Brightest Diamond, Derek Webb and Sandra McCracken, and Jose Gonzalez. Our story has been documented by ABC News and various print publications.

Through our SEED initiative, HOPE program and other mercy ministries, we strive to be a church "in the city, for the city" that improves the quality of life for all of Louisville's residents, particularly those without a voice and without the means to help themselves, because this is part of the gospel mandate. We hope to be a good neighbor and to spread the gospel of Jesus Christ with our hands, our feet, our hearts and our songs.

Pay What You Want For Our Latest Album -- Or Get It For Free!

Pay What You Want For Our Latest Album - Or Get It For Free!

This season of Advent is just a month away -- the season when we wait with anticipation and longing for Christmas morning, the birth of the promised Messiah. Our most recently completed CD, Advent Songs, is a collection of eight classic and original songs about this Messiah, from the lament and longing of "O Come O Come Emmanuel" to the fulfillment that Christmas morning brings with "What Child is This?"

The physical CD sells for $10 in our online store at www.sojournmusic.com. But now, we're offering a special price for the digital download version -- in fact, we're letting you set the price. Pay what you want or can afford. Or, by recommending Advent Songs by Sojourn to five friends through email, you can download all eight songs for free. Click "Advent Songs" at www.sojournmusic.com, which will take you to the mp3 store for Advent Songs, where you can either:

Set the price that you'd like to pay for this latest Sojourn worship album.

Fill in the email addresses of five of your friends, allowing you to download the record for free.

If you choose option 2, your friends will not receive endless emails from us or our partner in this venture, Derek Webb's Noisetrade.com. In fact, we won't even hang on to the email addresses. Instead, an automatically generated email will be sent to your friends, telling them that you recommend they check out Advent Songs by Sojourn, and providing the link for them to do so. They, in turn, will also be able to choose to pay whatever they want or to get it for free in exchange for recommending it to five friends, if the album is of interest to them.

In addition to the two standard songs listed above, Advent Songs includes favorites like "O Come, All Ye Faithful," "Joy to the World" (which receives a compelling new melody from Jamie Barnes), and brand new music by Sojourn worship songwriters who have contributed to Before the Throne and our other CDs, like Mike Cosper, Jeremy Quillo, and Neil and Kate Robins.

Released locally last December, Advent Songs received extensive radio airplay from Louisville's major AAA radio station, WFPK 91.9 FM. The Gannett-owned Louisville weekly Velocity said "it's a welcome change from the same old holiday ear candy."

Sojourn Hosts New Event Series For Music Makers

Saturday, January 19 at 3 pm, get ready for the debut of Sojourn's new Songwriting Seminar series, a bi-monthly series of events that will feature instruction from a rotating cast of visiting songwriters in The 930 Listening Room, part of Sojourn's community center, The 930 (located at 930 Mary Street, Louisville, KY 40204, part of Louisville's historic Germantown neighborhood, just minutes from I-65).

If you are a songwriter, you desire to be, or you have an interest as a listener, critic, singer or musician, please join us Saturday, January 19 - and keep checking here for more details as the date approaches (or visit www.sojournmusic.com).

We've asked singer-songwriter Jamie Barnes to inaugurate this series. A favorite son of the Louisville music scene and a member of Sojourn's worship arts team, Jamie is fast becoming known for his perspicacious songwriting, multi-faceted instrumentalism and silky-smooth vocals nationally and even abroad, with radio airplay, album sales and sterling reviews in several foreign countries. Read a sampling of what others are saying about the music of Jamie Barnes, and come prepared to learn his story and his theories for making great works of art:

Billboard Magazine: "... when Jamie Barnes' music impacts you, you're paralyzed."

Louisville Courier Journal: "Barnes' gorgeous new album, 'The Recalibrated Heart,' is his most fully realized work. There's a depth to the imagery and melodies that recalls the music of Sufjan Stevens and in many ways is just as rewarding."

Babysue.com: "This is probably about as honest as music gets"

The Broken Face (Sweden): "... one of the most unique contemporary voices out there today"
