Google has now added a single button that merges all your duplicate contacts at once. To clean up your contact list in one fell swoop, just click the “Find duplicates” button in the contact manager, review the merge suggestions (and uncheck any suggestions you don’t want merged), and hit the “Merge” button.

Inside the Louise M. Davies Symphony Hall. The official rule is that no photography is allowed in the hall at any time. However, my friend, a “symphony subscriber,” has even had ushers help take pictures in the past. Go figure.

I always feel outta place when I’m there. (Like I said, my friend is a subscriber.) I work for a non-profit, which means I don’t make truckloads of money. I’m not white, married, nor am I middle-aged, although some of my students may like to think I am. Oh, and I’m a Raiders fan. I’m not trying to stereotype, but I’m just making an observation that I’m part of the minority when I’m there. Wait, when am I NOT part of the minority? I should be used to it by now. (Tell that to my face and I’ll kick your… you’re lucky I found Jesus).

Enough nyquil-induced rambling, I’m glad I got to hear the San Francisco Symphony Chorus sing Bach’s Christmas Oratorio that night.

Google Voice

I’ve been using Google Voice since it was known as GrandCentral. It changed over sometime March 2009. Too bad they didn’t have that nifty “vanity name selector” when I signed up or else I would have gone for something like ###-BEEJ. Well, Google Voice is available by invitation only, and it seems pretty tough for people to get invitations because its demand has remained quite high since the beginning.

Fret not, because I have a grand total of THREE invitations. I had some invites for Google Wave too, but no one was interested.

I actually use Google Voice quite a bit because I deal a lot on Craigslist, so it’s nice not to give away my real phone number. My Google Voice number actually forwards to my cell. It even lets me screen calls and check voicemail online.

Want an invite?

Since I only have 3 invites, I thought I’d be creative. Leave a comment following guidelines below:

Comment must be left before 12 noon Pacific Time, Thursday, December 10, 2009.
In the email field, use the email address you’d like the invitation sent to in the body of the message. Double check that the email address you provide is accurate! Please note that Google Voice is only available for sign up in the US.

I’ll use a random number generator to pick 3 to send invites to. I get very few comments on my site to begin with, so if there are only 3 or fewer requests, congratulations! Everyone gets one! If you don’t want an invite, but just want to leave a comment, that’s cool too, but do the rest of the peeps a favor and specify that you don’t need an invitation.

You can also just request an invite directly from Google by visiting their Request an Invite page.

China’s 56 Ethnic Groups

The vast majority (over 90%) of Chinese are Han Chinese. The remainder is distributed among 55 other ethnic groups. This diversity was displayed during the opening ceremonies of the last Olympic games where fifty-six children from the 56 Chinese ethnic groups clustered around the Chinese national flag supposedly represented the 56 ethnic groups. It was later revealed that the children were not actually from those ethnic groups.

Check out this impressive photo gallery that portrays the actual ethnic groups in professionally composed group portraits, with the subjects donning traditional garb and carrying traditional instruments or tools. Pictured above is the ethnic Hui people.

I had the opportunity to do my first family “photoshoot” EVER. I put it in quotes, because I don’t think I really did anything other than push the shutter button. The parents, my colleagues, both happen to be photographers themselves. No pressure, right? It was definitely challenging to get everyone (Mom, Dad, 3 year old pictured above, and 2 month old infant) looking perfectly in the same frame. The parents were really gracious and I hope to continue to learn more from them. It was quite fun. Thanks again, Peichi and Dan!

Speed Up Wordpress by Compressing Output

I’ve used dreamhost to host this website for years, but for some reason, wordpress runs extremely slowly on it. But I found some code to compress your php so I’m giving it a try. Does my page load a faster? Seems so to me, but maybe it’s just psychological.

First, place the following code in a file and call it “test.php” and then upload it to the root of your blog directory:

Make sure that “zlib” is enabled by your hosting provider.

Second, place the following code in your header (above the DOCTYPE):

Restore a Missing Personal User Folder in Vista

I double as the IT department at work because I’m geeky. My boss’ wife had some issues on vista because she had created multiple desktop and document folders. I’m posting this if I ever need this information again.

To restore a personal user folder if it has been deleted, in the wrong location, or is missing from your C:\Users\(user name) or Start menu location:

1. Open the Start menu.

2. In the white line (Start Search) area, type in the shell command for the missing Personal User folder and press Enter.
