Some Velvet Morning

For some three's a crowd, but not in the case of London-based trio, Some Velvet Morning. Drummer Rob Flanagan joined brothers Des and Gavin Lambert back in the autumn of 2000, following a brief spell with the 22-20s. Ever since, Some Velvet Morning have been a regular feature on the capital's live music scene, chalking up over 200 shows to date.

It was in Soho's musical Mecca, Denmark Street, that Rob and Des first met. Positioning himself daily in what is described by many as London's Tin Pan Alley, Des could be found composing on the piano John Lennon had used to write 'Imagine' - inspiration obviously embedded in the wooden frame.

From their first rehearsal (Des switching to guitar and Gavin on bass), it was evident that the three held many musical influences in common including Blondie, The Police, U2 and of course The Beatles. Indeed, like the Fab Four's Hamburg residency 40 years earlier, 2004 saw Some Velvet Morning playing all nighters across the French Riviera.

Upon returning to the UK, they had honed their sound. Within months Some Velvet Morning were signed to the New York indie label, RhythmBank Entertainment, founded by Nona Hendryx (Labelle / Talking Heads) and Vicki Wickham (Dusty Springfield / Morrissey / The Who).

This year has seen the band complete their debut album. Recorded and mixed over the summer at a number of studios (including Mayfair, The Strongrooms, Miloco and the legendary underground 'Fishmarket' complex), producers Rik Simpson (Coldplay/Kasabian) and Mike Pelanconi (Lily Allen / Graham Coxon) have helped capture Some Velvet Morning's live energy on record.

Some Velvet Morning Diary (September)

September 21

Those of you lucky folks in the States, who will be receiving our debut album on October 9th, a whole two weeks before us Brits, can now pre-order the aural loveliness that is Silence Will Kill You from a variety of online stores. See here: Amazon, Tower, Overstock, J&R Music/Computer World. Indeed, it's also worth noting that the initial US run is only a few thousand, so get your order in early. Go on. Do it. Do it now!!!

September 19

Apparently we were on Radio 2 on Saturday, with album track Let The Good Times Come My Way. Amusingly, we don't even know how they got hold of it. Intriguing. Anyhow, see here to listen to the show - we're about an hour and five minutes in...

September 18

Rob has updated his blog here.

September 16

Folks, we're making a Pretty Girl video and we need your help. Quite simply, we need footage of all you beautiful people out there singing/dancing/gyrating along to the aforementioned song. Clips can be up to 4 minutes long. Good quality mobile phone footage will be accepted, although using a video camera is preferable. Files need to be sent to mail@somevelvetmorning.co.uk and there's a signed album for those who have their entry used (so do include your name and address).

There's also a signed album available for the person who can include our rather lovely new SNOCAP MyStore on the most web pages. Just send us the URL links to mail@somevelvetmorning.co.uk

Finally, next week we'll be publishing the complete lyrics to our album on here, which is rather splendid. In fact, I'm so excited my trousers have caught fire...

September 14

Those observant folk amongst you have no doubt noticed the additon of a SNOCAP "shop" on our page. Rather excitingly it allows you lucky folk the chance to download live favourite Godless for the first time. How great is that? It's muchly great!

Of course, if you're feeling really, super generous you can even add it to your page. Just click "Share" and you'll get the HTML code that can be pasted pretty much to any web page. Oh mama!

Also, look out over the next couple of weeks for a bunch of competitions to win various SVM signed CDs and the like. Are you luckiest folk ever? Well, yes, you probably are...
September 12

We had our 60,000th play today on MySpace which is rather lovely. Also, I've mentioned it before, but apparently it's very helpful if you beautiful people add Some Velvet Morning to your favourite bands list on any of the various community sites.

And for those of you not sick of us going on about our trip to Russia, we've added a new photo folder of Moscow shots.

September 11

Why, what is this? It's our album of course. Hurrah!

Something of a busy day for the SVM chaps, with a sadly rather brief visit to the demonstration against the occupation of the Gaza Strip and West Bank, before jetting off to see The Police at Twickenham Stadium.

Highlights? Message In A Bottle and Can't Stand Losing You, without a doubt. Don't Stand So Close To Me was a little disappointing, though. As was the strange decision to end the encore with an obscure album track (after the crowd-pleasing Every Breath You Take). I'm a also thinking of starting a campaign against all-seater gigs as, maybe it's just me, but there just seems to be less energy. Sting is still a great singer. If he'd just leave his lute alone... Matron!

September 8

So, a thoroughly enjoyable gig at the always charming Ginglik on Thursday. Indeed, the converted Victorian toilet even played host to 80s icon Holly Johnson (of Frankie Goes To Hollywood), who is something of a fan of the band.

Elsewhere, hearty congratulations to Klaxons who scooped the highly-regarded Mercury Music Prize. (For any international readers, the MMC is basically the UKs top award for musical creativity without commercial success necessarily being required.) Certainly, Myths Of The Near Future is our favourite release for some time, and along with the four singles (Golden Skans, Magick, Atlantis To Interzone and Gravity's Rainbow), Totem On The Timeline and Two Receivers are definitely worth checking out.September 5

First off, Knocked Up - not bad, but a bit thin on the laughs. 2.5/5

On the SVM front, our album running order has been announced (Let The Good Times Come My Way, Losing My Mind, One Day You'll Love The Things You Hate, Pretty Girl, Stolen Love Song, Stone Cold, Propaganda, Godless, Settle Down, The Nightshift and The Madness Of Crowds), and the artwork will be unveiled Friday.

Also, Losing My Mind has been included on an NUS compilation (10,000 copies apparently), which is rather nice.

Oh, and anyone who frequents indie club nights, you hopefully can now request Pretty Girl. Or Losing My Mind, which is apparently a bit of a "hit" on this circuit. Or so we're told...

September 2

Man, we're into September already?! Is 2007 going really fast, or is it just me?

Anyhow, this Thursday sees us at a venue we've not played in a while - the Bedouwin-esque Ginglik in Shepherd's Bush. At the moment, however, it looks like it might be marred by a strike on the Underground, which is a shame as after our performance we'll be DJing into the wee hours. Fingers crossed it'll be called off...

On something of a more serious note, next week we'll again be joining the protest over Isreal's occupation of the West Bank and Gaza Strip at the Football Association HQ for the England-Israel game. Certainly, we picked up a wealth of interesting literature on the subject on our previous outing back in March. Rather sinisterly the police were around overtly filming, presumably in an attempt to intimidate. Fortunately, we're not camera shy...
