Recorded on the run, on my internal laptop mic onto Audacity. This was all done in the culture lab foyer, to keep my voice quiet, whispery and so that each part was a live performance. While I could only do this as a recording, I'm still obsessed with the immediacy of performance and one take. This is both a recording in itself and an archive of the culture lab foyer.

I started with verse one, recording the low voice first, with the idea of singing very quietly close to the mic and imagining I'd want to sing 3 verses in 3 different registers. Because I've harmonised to this song in sessions for years, I enjoyed shoving some commonly improvised harmonies into a 'wee mousey' voice that contrasted with the low voice.

It's hard to control pitch using that tone/register in my voice, which led to me treating the pitch very roughly. I decided to exaggerate the dissonance around the pitch set of the song. I wanted the harmony to slide between harshly colourful and muddy, but to retain the tonal centre, never losing the sense of the song's pitch set.

Then I had the idea of staying all in the middle of my voice, humming the tune and using the words as riffs as contrast to before. This made the harmony overshadow the tune. So for the next verse, I allowed the harmony to slide around and almost obliterate the sense of the melody and pull the timing around. I recorded the tune last here.

Final verse was allowing my internalised knowledge of the song to take over, improvising around it. I confess to practicing against the first layer to get a sense of the contour. It kind of breaks down what I want doing all along. I think at this point, because of the preceding verse, I've set up an aesthetic that makes the exaggerated slides resolve the harmonic sense of the piece.

Most Wednesdays: Burke's Peerage

Caroline goes to the Linen Hall Library and sings a work song to a volume of Burke's Peerage (thus subverting the aristocracy in a totally insignificant gesture). By the way, anyone can direct the next Most Wednesdays. I can sing the words that you send me in one of many musical idioms. Suggest makeup and costumes and ask me to sing an old song or write a new song for you, or you could just tell me to improvise. Send me a comment or a message or an email with your directions.
