Soulja Boy, born in Chicago, IL in 1990, made his first rap when he was 5 years old.
In 1996, he and his mother moved to Atlanta, GA, where he learned how to make beats and dance. At that time, snap music was just coming into play in Atlanta. Soulja Boy began mixing Chicago-styled flow with Atlanta-made beats and the hits began to pour out.
In 2004, Soulja Boy moved to Batesville, MS, just 40 miles south of Memphis. Batesville introduced him to the distinct sound of Memphis rap. When his dad brought him into an in-house studio, Soulja’s future as a great hip-hop musician was decided. He started his official Web site, www.SouljaBoyTellEm.com, and has been making music ever since.
Soulja’s unique take on dance and snap music has garnered much respect from peers and fans. When asked about his origins, he would say, “Chi-lanta-sippi,” representing all the places he found influence.
He started working with a Mississippi-based management team doing shows across the country. From skating rinks, sweet 16s and exclusive private parties, Soulja Boy has played to all crowds. In order to stay connected with his diverse fan-base that spans the country, Soulja Boy set up a MySpace page, www.myspace.com/SouljaBoyTellEm. Since the creation of his page in July 2006, Soulja Boy has broken MySpace history for an independent artist.
In a short time span, Soulja Boy’s page has reached nearly 2 million views with 5.3 million total song plays. Depending on the day, his profile can average 30,000 plays and 3,000 individual downloads. With his unbelievable numbers, there isn’t another independent artist that can touch him. Of the 30 million independent acts on MySpace, Soulja Boy is ranked number one. It is no surprise Soulja Boy has been approached by many major record labels because of the potential they see in this youngster.
