Huff. Post Article: "Viacom to Employees: Happy Holidays and Go Screw Yourselves"

As a participant in the Street Team project (I represented Tennessee), I am grateful to see this coverage of the negligent and irresponsible corporate practices by Viacom/MTV. I would just like to note the abundance of hard work and good faith effort that went into this project by the journalists in each state, as well as many staffers and producers at MTV News (many of whom were essentially "volunteering" their services by taking on the extra responsibility of acting as editorial advisors to the Street Team journalists). Many people worked incredibly hard for very modest pay because we believed in the mission of the project, citizen journalism, and the Knight Foundation. The inconsistent payment and the ambiguous (sometimes flippant) communication regarding the matter left me stunned at what poor stewards Viacom proved to be of the $700,000 grant they received from the Knight Foundation. They also managed to create a great many Anti-MTV/Viacom "ambassadors" among the Street Team journalists, some of whom are likely headed towards influential positions and careers within media and journalism. When will these suits ever learn that responsible, respectful, and ethical corporate practices are actually better for their bottom line in the long run?

Perhaps Viacom has been hoarding these freelancers' paychecks so they can manipulate their quarterly reports with the illusion of more cash assets on hand or less debt owed (our last round of back pay seemed to be mailed exactly one day after the third quarter ended.)

Los Angeles Times Reporters File Class-Action Lawsuit Against Sam Zell, Tribune

On a depressing news day, this is the best thing I've heard. People like Sam Zell have ruined America, weakened the role of a free press, and destroyed journalism all in the name of adding to their already embarrassing riches. I pray this goes to trial and Zell goes down hard. Every L.A. Times employee should sign on (can all Tribune employees get on board, or just those at the L.A. Times?)

The Rachel Maddow Show Set To Premiere As Host "On The Cusp Of Full-Blown Stardom"

I am eagerly anticipating Maddow's show. In my last post, I criticized Olbermann for his ego and crassness, even as I often agree with him. I'm hoping that Maddow brings a more level-headed, intellectual approach to her show, even as she presents the news with a point of view.

I'm embarrassed to say that I didn't realize until reading the Boston Globe article linked below that Maddow was "Dr. Maddow" and a Rhodes Scholar to boot. We desperately more credentials like that in broadcast media, as opposed to former politicians and party hacks (see Pat Buchanan Paul Begala, etc.)

Olbermann, for all of his faults, has proven that a leftward point of view can succeed in the commercial marketplace. I'm hoping that Maddow can prove that reasoned, intelligent analysis and debate from the left can also compete. Frankly, it's an open question. I just pray that she doesn't succumb to "Oddball" type fluff and self-serving, over the top "Special Comments" to generate ratings. If what she has to offer (intelligence and thoughtfulness) doesn't generate the numbers that MSNBC needs, maybe she can shift to PBS or, better yet, help generate a new home altogether for intelligent analysis from ALL points of view.

MSNBC Drops Keith Olbermann And Chris Matthews From Anchor Chair During Election Coverage

Thank god MSNBC has come to their senses. As a progressive, I found their coverage embarrassing. Olbermann in particular presents himself only slightly more respectably than Bill O'Reilly. I agree with the majority of Olbermann's positions, but his self-righteous denunciations were just crass and boorish. See Bill Moyers for an example of journalism with a point of view that knows how to cover news with class and dignity.

Progressives defending Olbermann should consider that he is doing as much to harm what they advocate as he is helping. His pompous, smug, and hair-trigger manner ensures that those who don't agree with him have no reason to take him seriously. I appreciate that Countdown occasionally covers stories not found elsewhere in the MSM, but Olbermann gets in the way of them with his ego. His co-opting of Edward R. Murrow's "Good night, and good luck" is blasphemous. You're no Morrow, Olbermann. Shoot for Moyers or maybe Amy Goodman as a model. MSNBC should keep him in the analyst chair, rather than the anchor chair until he matures as a journalist.
