sQuare productions is a Boston-based film company making a movie about techno that's not about techno. Speaking in Code documents, in a fresh-looking, verite style, a series of colorful characters -- producers, promoters, DJs, journalists - who live and work in the world of underground techno. We follow them as they fight to succeed and triumph.

Universal themes about the struggle of a community, the acceptance of art and the humanity of artists come through in over 230 hours of unedited footage.

Hello Friends of Square Productions,

Speaking in Code at Beatportal

First off, our project is generating more interest out in the world. This time in the form of Beatportal, the editorial wing of Beatport, the definitive site for dance music downloads.

The site interviewed Director Amy Grill about the project. You can view the interview (and trailer) here:

http://www.beatportal.com/news/item/speaking-in-code-exclusive-trailer/

Give it a read and, if you're up for it, leave the story a comment.

This is a significant development for a number of reasons. For one, Beatport is an international shop reaching all over the electronic music world. Even more than the recent XLR8R interview, a shout from Beatport again affirms our belief that Speaking in Code has an audience that attracts a global audience.

With this in mind, and upon further brainstorming, sQuare productions is aiming to show the film at the Toronto Film Festival, a gathering with a more international reach than any other festival in North America.

Working towards that goal also allows us more time to test different versions of the film to different audiences and tailor it to a particular crowd, one that loves good narrative documentary, well-framed and photographed images and great characters.

To assist in the making of Speaking in Code, we would encourage you to rech out to our producer, Alexandra Lee at alex@squar3.com.

On that front, very big news to come from sQuare productions. We can't fill you in on the details just yet, but stay tuned.

Wighnomy DJ Set

Two of our characters in Speaking in Code are the amazing and delightful Wighnomy Brothers. Their music is amazing, and their DJ sets are something of a legend. Someone was smart enough to record their recent DJ set at Mutek.

Speaking in Code co-producer, character and author Philip Sherburne said this about the set:

"The Wighnomy Brothers closed out the festival, and I can say unconditionally that the boys from Jena are officially my favorite DJs in the world. No one in techno plays with the variety, the agreeable unpredictability nor the good humor that they do. I have no idea what 90% of their set was but trainspotting was hardly the point. They kicked off with a gospel-style a cappella preaching the spiritual uplift of house music, and returned several times to the conceit, punctuating their rambunctious rambling with the Sunday school voiceovers. It could have felt tongue-in-cheek, but instead, with the sun out and two or three thousand people dancing and lounging, including many families with children, it felt appropriate: our generation's version of, well, Sunday school."

More at:

See the link below to download this set, recorded from the soundboard by an eager fan.

Simply type in the three digit code on the right of the screen to download. This is a four-hour set, so it might take some time to get the whole thing, but it's a lot of fun.

Email Update 5/31/07

Hi sQuarelist,

Two things.

First off, we thought to give the sQuare newslist a more thorough run-down of what we need to accomplish before our deadline of September 14th.

As it stands now, we have 230 hours of film about some of the most interesting people in electronic music.

In the work we've accomplished so far, here are some moments we've earmarked for use in SiC:

- In the studio with Robag Whrume. One of the world's premiere remix talents, we see him work, and procrasinate, in his small community in the mountains of former East Germany

- Preparing for the annual "family" dinner at Kompakt, featuring Kompakt artists and employees cooking for the special evening.

- The last weekend in America with ex-patriot and accomplished writer Philip Sherburne as he prepares to leave for Barcelona.

- Club preparation with DJ Spinoza, as the NYC techno promoter reconciles a club's flamboyant, psychedelic aesthetic with his own minimal ideals.

And so on.

*Speaking in Code approaches electronic music with levels of intimacy unrivaled by any other film about the scene.

Logging the remaining footage and marking where interesting moments and shots happen is our #1 priority before we can dive into editing the movie itself. So far, we have 4 dedicated loggers on board to help us sort footage in the weeks ahead.

More are always welcome. If you have knowledge of Final Cut Pro and would like to gain valuable experience in the world of documentary film, shoot an email to director Amy Grill at amy@squar3.com

We have also been reaching out to our local contacts via the Independent Film Festival of Boston, Video Underground and the Filmmakers Workshop. The advice and feedback that individuals at these organizations has provided is invaluable and reassuring. It is great for us to hear that people of all types are quite fascinated with the stories and characters our film represents.

In addition to reviewing hundreds of hours of film and fielding advice from industry professionals, we are also looking for investors to help us hit our September deadline. To assist us with this work, we have brought on a new producer, our friend and expert fund-raiser and development professional Alexandra Lee.

Alex is currently working with the Constellation Center, a state-of-the-art cinema performing arts center facility to be built in Kendall Square, Cambridge, as a development associate - raising the capital funds to make the Center a reality.

We are quite ready to talk to individual investors on our project. A business plan and other information is available by request. To be sure, everyone who has contributed via our benefits and via our website will be duly compensated with screen credit and so forth, but the time has come for our potential Executive Producers and Associate Producers to come on board with us.

With the assistance of friends and family, sQuare productions has spent over $50,000 to date. We are looking forward to gaining partners to help us the rest of the way.

If you are interested in receiving more information about investment opportunities with SiC, please feel free to contact Alex via email at alex@squar3.com. She will be able to answer questions regarding our business plan, benefits and rights of investors, and any other questions you may have.

sQuare productions has long been a business, but now Speaking in Code, LLC is ready for contributors.

Our 4-minute trailer will debut on the Internet in mere days!

Thank you.

Pantha Du Prince @ RocketBar

Of course, we are still interested in seeing the scene in Boston flourish and Thursday night one of the most heralded producers in the world comes to town to play live.

As relayed on the blog, Pantha du Prince (aka Hendrik Weber) is flying direct from Germany to play a set of live techno tonight at RocketBar (formerly the Modern).

DJ Todd Gys and DJ Die Young will open.

More information, and music, here:

http://www.myspace.com/basstownpresents

In the spirit of including DJ mixes in our email updates, below is a 3-hour mix from DJ Pantha Du Prince. Bear in mind this is a DJ mix and not a live performance of his own music.

It's still quite good.

To RSVP for $5 reduced admission to tonight's remarkable show send an email to basstownprod@gmail.com with your name and the names of your guests.

For a link to download Henrik's 3-hour mix go here:
