Taco Ockerse (b. 1955, Jakarta, Indonesia) was born of Dutch parents. His grandfather was a professional pianist and artist in Indonesia. After settling in Hamburg, little Taco studied body movement, dance, and theater, and was acting in musicals by the mid-'70s. In 1979, he played Chino in a German remake of West Side Story. The following year, Mr. T -- in tails and talcum -- was working night spots with his own group, Taco's Bizz. A portion of his act involved updating nostalgic numbers like the Irving Berlin evergreen "Puttin' on the Ritz."

Late in 1981, with the aid of arranger/multi-instrumentalist Werner Lang, Taco cut "Puttin' on the Ritz" -- a 1930 chart-topper for Harry Richman -- and other reworked oldies for his debut LP, Taco After Eight (1983). Nearly a year passed before Taco's tune was tasted by the German public. "I tried everything [including acting out the song as part of a computer music program at a department store] to get it going," Taco told Cashbox. Finally, Germany, Austria, Yugoslavia, and a number of other countries took a transitory liking to Taco's take on Berlin's timeless tune.

To date, "Cheek to Cheek" and similar auditory excavations have fared poorly.

the great post-rock binge of '07

I usually aim to have as much variety in my listening habits as possible, but sometimes the occasional binge of a particular artist or genre makes its way through my speakers and into my skull. Earlier today I finished up a marathon post-rock session that took place over the course of two days. I know that there are plenty of obsessives out there that only listen to post-rock, but as i said, I usually try and keep a good mix going.

Here is some raw data involving my dive into intense post-rock listening:

14 bands
14 albums
99 songs
12.5 hours
7.5 minutes per song on average

Longest track: "Sleep: They Don't Sleep Anymore On the Beach/Monheim/Broken Windows, Locks of Love Part III" by Godspeed You! Black Emperor .... clocking in at 23 minutes 17 seconds

The list of albums is as follows:

1. Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Lift Your Skinny Fists Like Antennas To Heaven (2 Discs)
2. Red Sparowes - At The Soundless Dawn
3. Mono - You Are There
4. Slint - Spiderland
5. Del Rey - Darkness and Distance
6. Pelican - The Fire In Our Throats Will Becken The Thaw
7. Bark Psychosis - Hex
8. Directions in Music - s/t
9. Mogwai - Mr. Beast
10. Sigur Ros - Agaetis Byrjun
11. Talk Talk - Laughing Stock
12. Do Make Say Think - You, You're A History In Rust
13. Shalabi Effect - The Trial of St-Orange
14. Tortoise - Millions Now Living Will Never Die

WHEW! thats a whole lot of crescendo!!!

I know, I know. There isn't any Explosions In The Sky! i don't own any (feel free to insult me as much as want on that one). If i had one of their albums, i'm sure it'd be included in the binge.
