Sweet June brings the ethos of 70's acid folk and fuses it with contemporary melodies and guitar-based riffs. More akin to a free-style Pentangle sound with overtones of Jose Gonzales thrown in, Mia, John and Fiona perform with an intense percussive style of complex finger-picking coupled with sublime vocal harmonies.
"...This is beautiful, organic contemporary Irish music with traditional elements peeping through..."
3 Weeks [official Edinburgh Festival live review]
John co-directs [with his twin brother Michael] the cult Irish group Anuna and has worked with Elvis Costello, Jeff Buckley, Sinead O'Connor and Moya Brennan. In 2005 his vocal arrangement of "Fionnghuala" appeared on the "The Chieftains: Live from Dublin: A Tribute to Derek Bell" and sang with Sting on the Grammy-winning "The long Black Veil". He featured on Jerry Fish's Meteor Irish Music Award winning album "Be Yourself" on backing vocals with Damien Rice. His work has appeared on most of Anuna's 10 studio albums. His solo album "Songs for a Fallen Angel" features his characteristic refined guitar and vocals. The first track "If all she has is you" was covered on Owen Brady's debut album "Prepare to be happy" released April 2008 by Sony BMG. In 2008 he appeared as special guest at Cork Opera house and The Olympia theatre Dublin for the recently re-formed legendary Irish band Moving Hearts. John is an accomplished photographer and designer and qualified from Trinity College Dublin as an Architect in 1990.
His album "Songs for a Fallen Angel" has just been nominated for a JPF award as the best Contemporary Music Album of 2009. This is the biggest Awards ceremony in the world with 42,000 albums reviewed.
