As this historic debate unfolds tonight, the focus in America has been on the economy. The debate is supposed to cover foreign policy, but with the confusion of the last days and the economic meltdown, anything could happen.
One thing is clear: John McCain did not go return to his job as a United States Senator as a political "stunt," but as a true effort to get this masssive economic bailout bill passed. McCain, who has a true record of bipartisanship (Barack Obama has voted with his party 97 percent of the time) is possibly the only person who could actually get this thing done.
John McCain is in a no-win situation here. He's had little time to prepare for the debate. He is showing true leadership by going to DC and trying to help and offering to put off the debate -- though Obama has backed out of the initial town halls he agreed to months ago. Obama said no. If McCain did not agree to debate tonight, he would look like he was unprepared. If he didn't address the economic crisis, he would be failing his own principles. Most Americans are unhappy with the bailout bill as proposed, and as it was leaked it shows they are right to be so: it was loaded, apparently, with pork (even to Joe Biden's district).
So how will John McCain do?
We know Barack Obama has spent days, hours, pouring over tapes of McCain's debate style. Maybe he's improved his own.
