About

the particularly piece of web realty you have found yourself on here is home to telafonica's demo mixes of songs as they progress. band members post their mixes for the others to hear and critique, so the quailty will range wildly from the outset of a song's life until the finished stages. feel free to make comment on anything you hear, though we won't necessarily listen to you. :)

the separation 5-10-08

this just in from blake. he's been cutting and stitching the files i passed on, then adding stuff back in, making noises on the guitar etc. i think it's getting close. vocals and guitar will need to be re-recorded properly, and it's quite boomy at the moment, so needs some eq-ing. i've also added eliza's lyrics, which are rather impressive, i think.

craven canary - rearview mirror (telafonica version)

the second of the recent remixes. blake has also done a version of this, which will most likely be paired together as an e-single in the very near future. the background is that craven canary trawls around myspace finding songs she likes, then records herself singing harmonies over them and posts them on her site. she then had the idea to reverse this process, so posted a raw recording of just her voice singing this fragment of a song for others to download then add music to. so this is my version. it has a few layers of field recording in the background which i added, edited and processed in with the more regular musical sounds. the longest part of the process was time stretching and compressing her vocal to fit with the rhythm. i think her original was sung with a swing feel, kind of country-ish, but with no specific timing, which gives the nice kind of unhinged quality to it. also features my first ever recorded piano work.

tidy kid - fluffy rabbit (telafonica version)

i've been working on a couple of remixes over the last few weeks and have decided to use them as a trial gound for ideas that might develop into other things later. so here's the first finished one - for tidy kid. it kind of uses an idea from our old track 'triptych' though this is actually just a diptych, with 2 distinct sections. the first is fairly straight up electro, then there's the sample that the original song is built around, which leads into the second, more abstract section, which plays with repetition and subtle change.

but i lose myself

bec and i wrote and recorded an entire song from scratch in one day. we did it for the 20th project on cabinet pin music. here are the results. i am happy because it does something i've not done for a number of years which is to make sample based music as opposed to programmed music. so i started out with collection some samples while bec started on the words. in between visiting the blactown art gallery to see bec and imojjen's work, having lunch at my parents and gardening, we worked on it off and on all day and are pretty happy with the results. of course, there's no problems in refining it as we go, except this version will appear on the next 20th compilation.

for the trainspotters, samples come from lcd sound system, chemical brothers, the beatles and martini brothers, with autoharp, recorders, cowbell, handclaps and vocals all recorded from real instruments (or body parts). oh, and we've been listeing to the go! team quite a bit this week if that's not alreay noticeable!

18.9.08
the separation demo 18-9-08

following blake's suggestion, there's a lot of sounds pulled out. the guitar is almost gone and where it still exists it's very bitcrushed. the ending is much better, too (though this particular mp3 cuts off the delay tail at the end for some reason)

16.9.08
the separation demo 16-9-08

eliza wrote some words and sung them for bec and i at the end of rehearsal tonight. their very great. i made a quick recording - hand held mic etc. the vocal peaks badly in the climax, and there's just some simple reverb on it. the last section is the middle section cut and paste in, so the dynamics of that are all wrong and it just stops suddenly. but it's here to give an indication of it as a song as opposed to a piece of music.

1.9.08
Nothing Ventured (7" Version)
An Invitation

these are the two final mixes for the 7". nothing ventured has the late addition of some autoharp chords. bec and i bought the autoharp at a school fete for $30 last saturday.

This is Splintered Oars.

So finally I'm paying some heed to this blogging business. I absolutely love But I Lose Myself, and I think The Separation sounds wonderful. I can't wait for us to get some new songs into our live gig loop.

And would you mind explaining the splintered oars thing?
