Brothers Ryan, Gary, and Ross Jarman grew up in Wakefield, England, and set out as The Cribs to bring a twist to the regurgitated UK indie-rock scene. They started playing shows in and around Wakefield in 2002, securing a spot on Carling Weekend at Leeds. They were quickly scooped up by Wichita Recordings, releasing a two-song 7" in 2003 and their debut self-titled full length in 2004. The band spent 2003-2005 rigorously touring, winning over fans throughout the UK, parts of Europe and Asia, and the US. Their first major hit came with 2005's single "Hey Scenesters!" their satirical take on the music scene, which became the first single off of their second Wichita album, 2005's "The New Fellas." "Hey Scenesters" became a Top 30 UK Hit, and was followed by other singles from the album including "Martell" and "Mirror Kissers."
In Spring 2005, with European shows supporting Bloc Party and Kaiser Chiefs in the bag, The Cribs headlined a series of shows and played on the NME / Rizla tour in the UK. In the US they toured with The Kaiser Chiefs, rocked out at SXSW in Austin and scored a well-placed "Hey Scenesters" track on The OC. They created a stir in 2006 with Ryan's infamous acceptance of the Kaiser Chief's award for Best Live Band at the 2006 NME awards, in which he flung himself back-first onto the center of their table, breaking plates and glasses, and landing in the hospital needing 30 stitches. After finishing up a very successful North American tour with Death Cab For Cutie and Franz Ferdinand, The Cribs returned home to the UK, where they performed on the festival circuit for the summer, playing at Leeds, Reading, T in the Park, and Japan's Fuji Rock.
Their third album and Warner debut, "Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever," (to be released May 21, 2007 in the UK and July 10 in the US) was produced by Franz Ferdinand's Alex Kapranos and mixed by Andy Wallace (Nirvana, Slayer, Afrika Bambaataa). One of the tracks also includes spoken word by Lee Ranaldo of Sonic Youth. The Cribs just finished touring in England and will be crossing the lake in late April for a short US tour including shows in San Francisco, Coachella Festival in Indio, CA, Toronto, NYC and Boston.
