Core members Matt Hall and Alex Behr met in San Francisco in 1990. Matt gave Alex a homemade tattoo at a party. It was supposed to be a spiral, but it looks like a comma.
Matt Hall is from Iowa City, where he played bass in the 80s punk rock band Stiff Legged Sheep. After moving to San Francisco he began playing in Glorious Din. He's also recorded bass with The Fucking Champs and his cousin Virgil Shaw.
Alex Behr moved to San Francisco from Virginia in 1983. She has recorded and performed with Heavenly Ten Stems, Job's Daughters, Caroliner Rainbow, and others.
They began writing songs with drummer Gary Held, and released two records as a three-piece. Gary left the band and they re-formed with drummer Chris "Fozzy" Holden and singer/songwriter Linda Hagood (Smack Dab). As a four-piece they released two more recordings.
In 2003, Matt and Alex moved to Portland, Oregon where they began writing and recording with drummer Geoff Soule (Sad Horse, Fuck, Staff, and more, much more).
