I am typing live from Interstate Highway 95, heading south to Philadelphia. This is very WEIRD:
We have wifi inside our splitter van, and half the band are on Skype to their loved-ones back home, watching them on the laptop screen. Is this not the height of modernity? We are all so far apart from our homes, continually moving, and yet communicating with everyone, all the time. I think this is a great thing. I am just perturbed by how many satellites there must be colliding with each other up there in the earth's atmosphere. Surely, they'll have to instigate congestion charge up there too?
So, now I'm thinking about what has been going on in the last few weeks. It all began in Nottingham. Snow falling outside. A great crowd, and a brilliant support band, Slow Club. I loved them from the minute we started talking in the dressing room. Just like their onstage personas, they were so warm and smart and funny. Their songs are clever in a simple way, rousing, emotive, stark, fun and childish all in one. Reminding me of Jonathan Richman, MO tucker, Moldy Peaches, even Lemonheads or the Carpenters. I wish we could tour all the time because they brought an extra serving of fun and non-twee "not fucking twee" quaintness to the room. And one half of the band is a lady! Which is kinda nice for me in a way i don't really think about until I hang out with a new Gal.
The KOKO show in London was one of my most favourite things ever, possibly. Red Lacquered walls and gold figureheads looming over you from the balconies, and from where I stood, hand grasping forward, it looked like I turned on the mirrorball with my fingers they way it just flashed on the minute I reached out! From that moment on I felt like I was in the Wizard of Oz and all around were cool looking munchkins who were voracious and charming and love-giving. The guys were not really tinmen or scarecrows, nor wicked witches. Maybe we were all an aspect of Dorothy, five alter-egos on a mission to whirl and freak with the sonic manifestation of the good-witch, and discover the wizard. And in the encore, we did. Amongst the shouts and moments of glory, there was great Oz himself a flash of excitement within the room, and we were not in Kansas anymore.
-----------------------------------------------------
Although actually, we will be playing in Kansas on Saturday April 26th, just incase you are interested!
The boys are in fine fettle, supercharged. Although last night we were so broken with tiredness that Tobe, Olly and I nearly missed the gig when we overslept in the van outside the show, where we'd sloped off to hide and search for new magical gig powers.
Dan has a great Clash T-shirt on today and Toby is driving whilst our awesome TM has a little rest and hands out Guacamole dip. Earlier we all sang along to George Michael and Elton John's duet. We just can't stop the 80's power ballads this week - what is wrong with us?
