The Fast Sails are an indie folk/rock group founded by singer Simone Snaith. Snaith was born in Louisiana to parents in punk and new wave bands, and was exposed to a lot of different music from the 60s and the 80s. The main bands heard around the house were The Kinks, The Clash, The Pretenders, The Supremes and Blondie. Snaith's mother also owned a book of traditional folk songs that they used to sing along with; to this day Snaith is always excited to hear one covered by artists like Nirvana ("In The Pines") or Nina Simone ("Black Is The Color"). No one can quite sing them like her mother, however.
In 2001 Snaith joined the post-hardcore band Wallace (not totally unlike Paramore, although they seem like nice kids), attracted by the small punk rock influence in the music, subjecting herself to the screamo scene and antics of "Jackass" proportions. The band fell apart in 2005, after two tours, one independently produced album, and zero in common between Snaith and the others. When Snaith began writing music on her own, her love of folk, new wave and melody came pouring back out. It was a relief not to be forced to sing as loud and as hard as she possibly could, and even to mellow out a little.
Snaith played several small shows as The Fast Sails with a friend, pop/rock singer/guitarist Stephanie Jacobson, and recorded a 5-song EP, produced by The Flying Tourbillon's Hunter Curra. The EP Something Could Be On Its Way has been heard on Killradio, KALX, WGMU, and a few other scattered stations, as well as blogged about once or twice. Snaith met guitarist Andy Kaufman through a mutual friend, and an ad was put out that produced bassist Jesse Liesch. Kaufman adds a slight alt-country edge to the band, helping The Fast Sails' sound fit in equally with folk, country or indie pop acts without missing a beat. They have a good time.
