invest in music.

namely local music, but any good music you encounter, invest in it through the purchase of band merchandise. when a band has a steady flow of outgoing merchandise, like stickers, shirts, and most of all music, they can produce more and more music.

help the bands you like to produce more and better music.

buy their music.

recording update

dear lovely readers,

i just returned home from a wonderful show: ghosts of the great highway, austin crane, and jill andrews. shows like that make me want to make music.

and so, i thought i would update you on the recent recording activities of the lovely few.

we finished tracking (most of it, anyway) for the new album last month. taylor has relocated to nashville, where he will record his parts and do post production. right now, we are thinking the album will have 10 tracks, around 9 of which will be new songs.

with taylor out of the area, our live performances will look a bit different. it seems that our members are a bit transient. that's ok. when i began this project, the idea was to have my friends playing music with me. as those friends go off to do their own things, i do miss them, but hope the best for them. as for the lovely few: as long as i have friends around, an this basic sound, we will play under this moniker.

the new album does not have a set release date. we still have some final budget issues to work out before we know what the end product will look like. this will definitely be the most expensive lovely few project to date; that's not saying a lot, though.

as this thing becomes more clear, we will keep you posted.

we will be touring to promote the new songs in advance of the release this fall and winter.

stay in touch, please.

vinyl questions.

hello one and all,

thanks for taking the time to read this.

i have a very important question to ask you. your input is priceless here. actually, your input is in the 1-2 grand range... so, to an out of work graduate student/musician: priceless!

WOULD YOU BUY VINYL FROM A LOCAL ARTIST?

sure, i buy vinyl records, but usually from an artist i care very deeply for. i collected a few toss aways, but then when next spring rolls around, those free delights are going to grace someone elses living room corner.

so, would YOU buy from a local artist? why or why not?

please tell your friends about this thread. the more input the better.
see also myspace.com/thelovelyfew.

thanks.

musical multiple personality disorder

there are a few mental illnesses not yet documented in the DSM. being a never-nude, and musical multiple personality disorder.

i have the latter. we're straight on the former (don't worry or think about it anymore).

taylor just sent me a post linking to a band called passion pit. they are good. not exactly close musical cousins to the lovely few, but still, a band i would love to be in.

and there's the problem: i am too easily convinced that i should be making all sorts of music. the other day my wife and i were shopping in a hardware store where i purchased a hacksaw. she said, "you know what would make a great punk metal band name? junior hacksaw." she's brilliant.

one of the many reasons i married her.

the rest of the day i thought about who i could get to join my imaginary band junior hacksaw. their main influence would be some mix of old underoath and old silent anthem. what a name, though, junior hacksaw...
speaking of, i totally called dibs on it, so... please don't take that name.
oh wait, they're already a mediocre blues band in wales. blast!

the point is, with so much inspirational music, sometimes it's hard to go into a single direction.
but even as i am pushing myself in writing songs for this new album, and venture into some brave new territory, i hope that my songs have something fast and something motivating. i want the songs to be coherent, but not stagnant. songwriters seem to be pursuing a perfect song, and in doing so we often pass by the same melodies or progressions from time to time. i hope there is something essential to my music that is unique, but approachable. i also hope it pushes people to reconsider certain aspects of music.
ambitious, yes. but it doesn't consume me. i feel like i have something to say. i enjoy saying it this way.

taylor and i are both playing with steven fiore this week at the new brookland tavern in west columbia, sc (thursday, may 14, 2009). check out his music. it's delightful. truly.
