It's not easy for an unsigned band to get press coverage in nationally distributed publications, or get major radio airplay on multiple stations. But it's almost impossible for an unsigned band to get the opportunity to showcase their music live on MTV in front of millions. It's not easy, but in the last two years, The Material has been making it happen.

Since February 2006, The Material has been working hard, to say the least. While pursuing her music degree from San Diego State University, Colleen D'Agostino, the dynamic front-woman of The Material, sought to create the sound of rock to come. She teamed up with guitarist, and fellow SDSU music major, Jon Moreaux, and drummer Noah Vowles to form the foundation of The Material. The threesome found bassist Brian Miller and guitarist Roi Elam through classified ads, and the five-piece ensemble began writing music.

With their first demos, The Material caught the attention of The City of San Diego Tourism Bureau and were asked to represent the music scene in an internationally distributed promotion disc. The demos, which were produced and engineered by Colleen, also sparked the interest of different radio stations. Rock 105.3 was the first to support the band, but eventually FM 94.9, Sophie 103.7, and 91x also put The Material in rotation.

In August 2006, 944 Magazine described the band's sound as "pure energy, passion, and emotion," and IndieMusicProject.com adds that The Material is "...as unique as snowflakes."

In September 2007, the band released their first EP titled "Tomorrow" on their own. The quality of the songs, along with their ever-growing live shows, were enough to earn the band a spot on MTV2's Dew Circuit Breakout--an annual show which helped launch careers of bands like Taking Back Sunday, Yellowcard, and Thursday. On December 15, 2007, The Material showed the world what they have to offer playing their single "The Long Way Home" on live-broadcast television. Pete Wentz of Fall Out Boy, who was on the celebrity talent panel at the show, complimented Colleen's voice and gave his vote to The Material.

In 2008, the band plans on touring and writing better songs. Jon explains, "We're not trying to be an overnight success story. We want to earn it." With the exposure they've been receiving from radio, magazines, and MTV, their success story may not be that far off.

Gagosian Liga, Jan 9, 2008:

"We all admire the spangled acrobat with classical grace meticulously walking his tight rope in the talcum light; but how much rarer art there is in the sagging rope expert wearing scarecrow clothes and impersonating a grotesque drunk! I should know." (Vladimir Nabokov)
