I wrote this song in response to Pluto not being a planet anymore. I had the music written for awhile and wasn't able to come up with any sort of descent lyrics. One day I was recording the music on my four track in hopes of coming up with something and picked up the microphone to spout out what honestly imagined would be a load of crap. Instead these lyrics spilled out. You might still think their crap but for me it's one of my favorite songs. Just a song for an ex-planet. Ryan H.

2,000 Zombies

In 2001 or so I wrote a song called 1,000's of zombies. I recorded it with my first band Usagi Kamikaze and it was on our four track album "Polybius". When my best friend Nathan heard it he suggested I do more zombie songs and increase the number every time. The idea really struck a chord with me and I started writing more. So far there have been four songs in what I call the Zombie quadrilogy (obviously). I never force the songs they just sort of pop up and happen. There may never be another zombie song written or there could be ten. Anyhoo I had big plans for this October. I wanted to rerecord the quadrilogy and put a song up a week until Halloween. Things just didn't work out though and the only one I was able to get done was 2,000 zombies at home one day. We don't regularly play this song and it's been several years since we recorded it the last time so it was interesting seeing the difference in the two. Honestly I enjoyed recording this more than I thought I would. Normally I don't like retreading old material but it was fun reinventing this tune. Hopefully at some point we'll get our crap together and we'll put out the rest of the quadrilogy for all you zombie lovers. Later, Ryan H.

Punk Rock

I wrote this song about our bass player Pete. As far as I know he does wear socks when he wears shoes but he is very punk rock. I don't remember much about the recording, I think this is several years old. I do remember a friend of Pete's coming over to jam with us a few times and I'm pretty sure he plays the distorted rhythm guitar. I think his name is Jessie, sorry I can't remember. I also remember me and Pete having a lot of fun screaming Punk Rock over and over again for the chorus. That's all I've got for this one. Enjoy. Ryan H.

Stars

This is one my more serious songs. It's about the week my dad died. I think most artists try to capture important events in their life through whatever their choice of medium is and I've never felt very successful at creating serious comics so I wrote a song about it. At the very least it felt very important to express myself about the event. The first song I wrote about it was very slow and ballad like. I played it a couple times with the band but it just never seemed right. So I abandoned it. It wasn't until a few years later that Stars came to life. The music came first, it was fairly fast and happy sounding and the last thing I thought it would be about was death. But the lyrics just came spilling out and it seemed to fit. Honestly I felt a little guilty about it at first and thought I should change either the lyrics or the music. The guilt didn't last long though. The more I thought about it the more it made sense. Although that week was sad and depressing for me I still found time to laugh, good things still happened, we still tried to have fun. The song has been a staple in our band practices ever since and we always have fun playing it. When we record as a full band we usually play live and then overdubb other instruments. I think the live portion of this song only took us like two takes to knock out. I'm also pretty proud of my acoustic guitar solo. Anyway, this rates as one of my favorite songs that I've ever written, I hope my dad would agree.

Tako

This is one of our "jam" songs I guess. It is about one of my many cats. If you read my comic Kitty Litter you've already met Sophie and heard a song about her here. Well Tako is one of the other inspirations for her. Every stupid thing Sophie has ever said is pure Tako. No she's not a talking cat but ask anyone who has met her and they will tell you that she is bat shit crazy. She's acutally going nuts as I type this. She's a five year old cat who acts like a five month old kitten. And yes she likes to sit on my shoulders. Luckily she's not very big. Anyway, onto the recording process. I recorded a demo of this on my 4 track a long time ago and I gave it a real heavy 80's sound (they're coming back have you heard?) it sounded really good but I wanted to add some stuff. Unfortunately the keyboard at Lee's house is much nicer than mine and the drum tracks on it sound more like real drums than on my yamaha keyboard. Normally this would be good but not for this song. All that being said I think the drum track we did was just fine just not as fake as I wanted it to sound. I did the bass track on the same keyboard with a synth bass effect which I had to do twice and was a pain in the ass. My favorite part though is the jam section. Lee plays the first guitar solo which is awesome, he's a much better guitar soloist than I could ever be. My guitar solo is the second and is loaded with plenty of obnoxious distortion to mask the fact that I suck. This also probably has the most abstract ending out of any song we've ever recorded. Pete started messing with a soon to be burned upright piano in our studio and we were inspired to put it at the end of the song. Unfortunately we were getting crappy sound out of it so I recorded the little didy at the end with the keyboard. All in all I think this song is one of the best sounding we've ever done and I'm real happy with it. Hope you like it too. Later, Ryan H.

So far this is the newest song I've put up on the internet. The drawing above was the inspiration for the song. I drew it for a never before seen comic strip and I believe I meant for the title to be Killbot 5,000,000 but I'm a bad typer and so this song was born. This is also the first song I've ever recorded in two places. I recorded the acoustic and one of the vocals live at Lee's house. Then a couple weeks later at my house I added some more vocals, bass and the keyboards. I recorded a few more songs at that "session" so I'll probably play with some more that way. As usual please feel free to download all my songs and share them with your friends. Later, Ryan H.

I wrote this a couple years ago and recorded it a couple weeks ago as usuall I guess. I have a live full band version which I might upload sometime but this one is newer so I went with it. So go ahead and download it and remember Talk Like a Pirate Day doesn't have to end here. Later Ryan H.

Tentacles

Anyone who has read my comics knows that I kind of have a thing for tentacles. I wrote a whole story called Tentacles for Kitty Litter , a lot of my monster have them like the one in the story I'm doing now and thouroughly just love to draw them. Almost as much as zombies. Anyway, it's no wonder that tentacles would seep into my music. I wrote this during a period of writing a lot of water inspired music. I don't live near the water and haven't been near the ocean in a very long time but I do live close to a pretty big lake so maybe driving past it every day inspired me. That and I like pirates and tentacles. The way the song loops back to the begining at the end was a happy accident while Lee and I were mixing and adding keyboards and fillers. I love happy accidents and it's rare that we don't use them. I can't remember much else about this recording session other than I think it's one of the first songs we recorded on the computer. It's a couple years old but still holds strong I think. Later, Ryan H.
