The Morning March

Acoustic / Indie / Rock

Vancouver, Canada

Hanging out in the Blue Mountains tonight. There's a cafe called 'Common Grounds' here that is part of the same community as 'Preserved Seed' in Nelson. Weird. Checking out the Caves tomorrow!

About

My name is Matt. I'm a solo singer/songwriter from Nelson, British Columbia who goes by the title 'The Morning March'. I play guitar, sing and record my material at home on my computer. When the songs sound close enough to the way I want them to, I chuck them up here for friends, family and fans (assuming I have more than one) to check them out. I'd describe my music as Acoustic/Alternative with a heavy focus on Lyrics.

I also keep some tunes up on other sites:

Hardcore Zen

I recently finished reading two books by Brad Warner. Both of which take Buddhism, Zen Buddhism to be more accurate, and sum it up in a fresh, stripped down, no bullshit, "Punk Rock" sort of way. Interestingly enough, Brad Warner was a member of the 80's Hardcore band …

Novembers Almost Gone

I finally got a decent take of one of my new songs. Its been a while that's for sure. I've been working on parts of songs, trying to fix 'em up for that EP I've been talking about. Some songs are coming along pretty good, some are giving me a hard time. There were a few …

Lyrics - September 7, 2009 - False Creek South

September 7, 2009

Out here, there is more than waves
These events are staged
Impossible, Frustrated
The reasons lie and wait

And here, we'll sit on the edge
Legs no longer needed
For when we dance we're dead
We'll linger here instead

I find life in the …

Lyrics - August 30, 2009 - Nanaimo Harbour

August 30, 2009 - Nanaimo Harbour

Wake up, wake up, its dusk
The lights are flickering like November's dying sun

Tonight they're going to cut you up
Tonight the world is out for blood
Its written in the songs of men
And their steady, endless, wanton …

Spring 09 Playlist

1. Manchester Orchestra - Shake it Out (Perfect indie rock. Passionate, gritty and well written. "I felt the world begin to peel off all my skin and I felt the weight within, reveal the bigger mess, that you can't fix.")

2. As Cities Burn - Into The Sea (One of this years best rock albums. This band keeps evolving through every album and seems to get better and better. "Though we don't need a mountain moved, we just want to move ourselves, take us somewhere, take us somewhere, anywhere else." )

3. Handsome Furs - Talking Hotel Arbat Blues (Dan Boeckner, half of Montreal's Wolf Parade, comes out swinging with his follow up solo album. Interlacing electronic beats with distorted guitars and haunting vocals, this song surfaces as one of the album's standouts.)

4. Metric - Gold, Guns and Girls (Metric's first album will always hold a place in my life's musical soundtrack but with their later releases I lost interest in the band. Their new album reminds me why I came to like their female fronted, electronic, indie rock in the first place.)

5. A Day to Remember - Homesick (A trend that I've seen popping up lately is Pop-Punk style vocals and hooks, coupled with Post-Hardcore type music and screaming. This is one of the standout tracks to a surprisingly fun album.)

6. The Loved Ones - Breathe In (Punk Rock with great vocal melodies.)

7. Acres Of Lions - Entertainment (Mellow Rock. Victoria's Acres of Lions (with a member from Nelson, I might add), came out with a pretty decent album this spring with a staggeringly good opening track.)

8. Polar Bear Club - As 'Twere the Mirror (Gritty Punk/Rock. One of my favourite new bands. "If it's not clear: This is a love song. What I held dear is in need of defense. By sword and shield, I will protect you. They'll recognize my battle cry.")

9. Valencia - I Can't See Myself (Pop Punk/Rock. I think I had them on a list before. This song's a standout from their latest album.)

10. Attack In Black - Moon Of Day (Canadian Rock. My favourite new band let me down a little with their follow up to the, near perfect, "Marriage". This new album, though a lot mellower and more a grower, still contains some hidden gems.)

11. Architects - Hollow Crown (Post-Hardcore, Metalcore. Their exceptional, intense new album comes with this song as a closer. Showing they can be heavy and powerful without guitar riffs and screaming. "As the sea breeze hits my lungs, it takes me back to where I belong.")

12. School of Seven Bells - Half Asleep (Electronic/Rock. Heard this as the soundtrack to a snowboard video and couldn't believe how good it was. Its one of those songs that always puts me in a good mood.)

13. This Town Needs Guns - 26 is Dancier than 4 (Math Rock. These guys know how to write a song. Calculated interweaving instruments, irregular time signatures. This is the type of stuff that puts everything I know about music and guitar to absolute shame; some of their guitar parts are mindblowing. Absolutely ridiculous.)

14. Boy in Static - Young San Francisco (Indie Rock. violin, electronic beats and soaring vocal melodies. Check out their music video: http://virb.com/boyinstatic/videos/2247227 )

15. Innerpartysystem - Heart On Fire (Electronic/Rock. These guys open for Underoath a few months ago here in Van and stole the show. Their lightshow was second to none, the mood, the music was all top notch. Not what I was expecting from a new band that, until their concert, I was not really stoked about. I came away from the show a fan.)

16. The Constantines - Young Lions (Stripped Down Version) (I had to put this in here. For those of you that don't know, these Eastern Canadian boys are my favourite band. This is a stripped down version of what might be my favourite song of all time and I think it almost captures the brilliance of their live show. "Loosen your collar, shake off the wires, run like a river, glow like a beacon fire.")

17. Get Cape, Wear Cape, Fly - Postcards From Catalunya (Acoustic Indie Rock. Fresh from the UK.)

18. Obadiah Parker - Hey Ya (Saw a version of this Outcast cover on Scrubs the other night and found it to be one of the greatest reinterpretations I've ever heard. Just amazing. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8-8nkkOA_AM&feature=related )

19. Us Against the Archers - For Those Of Us That Still Dream (Punk/Rock. I don't really know anything about this band. One of those random impulse downloads that ended up being a good one. Sounds similar to Mellencolin.)

20. Between the Trees - White Lines and Red Lights (Saw these guys open for Anberlin and their unique blend of piano driven Pop-Rock was not unlike some of the better Anberlin songs.)

21. Umphrey's Mcgee - Mantis (Epic twelve minute tune with a distinctively 90's Prog Rock sound.)
