Recording begins

Recording has begun on what will be our first LP as The Murky Water District. As you know, this group began as a collective of musicians originally for the purpose of recreating home recordings for live shows. We have been able to move past that stage and onto the creation of new songs written by the band as a whole. We are recording 12 songs with the expectation that some might not end up sounding quite as planned. This will enable us to whittle the number of songs down if necessary. 12 songs does seem like quite a daunting task but I am confident that it will all have been worth it in the end. The first half of creating this LP involves re-recording all of the previous home recordings. That is the easy part in my opinion. The more difficult task comes when we attempt to record the songs that have not previously existed in demo form. This is where all the years of combined experience will become most valuable. All members in the band have previous recording chops. Having recorded and produced several albums for previous projects, Chung is by far the most qualified to sit behind the controls. It is for this reason that Chung's apartment has been the site of all recording so far. Having everyone else's involvement and input will only help enhance the finished product. Perhaps the most important thing for us to keep in mind is to simply try to have fun with the whole process. It's necessary to try new things mostly because you never know when mistakes might turn into happy accidents. There are so many things to consider and so many things to prepare for. Searching for a nice piano to use in recording Jame's songs will surely be an adventure. We are also restoring a Fender Rhodes piano to be used on the album. Lots to do! In essence, this LP will also be a "home recording" but with much better equipment. We should be done sometime in the spring of 2008...but that is just a guess. To be continued...
