Here is the tale of our 2008. Appx. 1 year ago, I was riding home from practice with my bandmate Louis, and I said, "I think we should make a double album". He expressed reservation, possibly because usually it takes us 3 years to make a *single* album, and the math on that seemed to lead to our graves. Then I said, "No, no, double album! For sure!" And he expressed further reservation, possibly because I say things like this all the time and then get distracted by tinfoil or a passing bird and then forget about it completely. So I countered with "But double album!" This was apparently not a winning argument, for shortly after, Louis wisely resigned from the band. :) (He now plays in the awesome Crosstown Rivals and the awesome Boats...please check them out!) Somehow, my skimpy yet enthusiastic concept, while not exactly *electrifying* the remaining members of the band, seemed to hold enough sway to at least get the ball rolling. We added two new guitarists (Kevin and Andrew) and got to work on it. From March to June we laid down a skeleton, then toured a bit of the summer. Andrew took his leave (He's playing in Human Garbage, and has another project up his sleeve, as far as I understand...I'll let you know when I have more deets). We picked up another Kevin. And we recorded through the fall. Everyone got more excited as the tracks started coming together. Double album! It is now 2009, and we stand on the cusp of completion: 32 songs, over 2 hours of new music, recorded by Jaret on a budget of $0.00. We've still got a bit of work to do, but shit! We did it! Basically. So I just want to thank my friends, Kevin, Kevin and Corey for embarking on this crazy project with me, Louis and Andrew for being part of the process, and most of all, Jaret, who has put over 7 billion hours of work into this thing. And thank YOU. I know that we're a band shrouded in murky mystery to most, and we don't deal out a particularly abundant amount of information. So thanks for your continued interest in spite of that. I hope y'all like it when you hear it. I mean, whenever we actually get a release date together. I mean, when we actually do finish it. I'm kinda jumping the gun a bit with this. I'm just pumped, is all. We'll have, like preview tracks and less vague plans coming up soon. Oh, you know, the actual point of this whole thing was to tell you that our new website is up at www.thepaperbacks.com. I think its all working, anyway. A special thank you goes to Virb.com who we have directed our URL to for the last couple of years. You guys are awesome! Hope you all have a wonderful 2009. -Doug.
"The Paperbacks have released an album unlike anything you've heard in a long time, and it's really, really good" Punk Planet, Nov./Dec. 2003. Featuring former Bonaduces frontman, Doug McLean, Winnipeg's The Paperbacks have been playing locally and touring internationally since the year 2000, while self-producing their debut full-length entitled "An Episode of Sparrows". Released in July of 2003 on Minneapolis based Pshaw! Records, "An Episode of Sparrows" has gained critical praise in both North America and Europe, where the record was released in October 2003 by U.K label The Newest Industry. Mixing equal parts indie rock, power pop with a dash of alt. country, The Paperbacks have an exceedingly mature sound. Showcasing McLean's unique lyrical voice, "An Episode of Sparrows" is an album that continues to grow deeper with each listen.
Fall 2007 the Paperbacks introduced their second full length "An Illusion Against Death". Produced by a long-time fan and supporter, Weakerthans frontman John K. Samson. The new disc was released in Canada on the Parliament of Trees label.
An Illusion Against Death" sees the band continue its lyrical exploration of hitherto uncharted territory: the layered heartache of taking one's mentally ill sister to visit a dying parent ('Institutions"), the willfully veiled language of medicine and romance ('Things Get Abstract'), the limits that bureaucracy and institutional inertia put on emotional response ('Holocaust Art'). The lyrical weight does not, however, offset the tunefulness, allowing "An Illusion Against Death" to vigorously showcase the band's various strengths. "An Illusion against Death" features the original line up of Doug McLean, Jaret Mcnabb, Jack Jonasson, Jason Churko and Tanya Jonasson.
Summer 2008 The Paperbacks are on tour throughout Canada with a new line up. Members include : Doug McLean - vocals and guitar, Jaret McNabb - bass, Kevin Andrechuck - guitar and vocals Andrew Fylik - Guitar and vocals, Corey Biluk - drums. The Band is also prepping matierial for a new album with a release set for March 2009.
