"Lit From Within" Available January 12, 2010.

"Lit From Within“ is the third full-length release from Winnipeg's The Paperbacks. The new double album, Produced by Jaret McNabb (Projektor “Tired Atlantic South” EP, The Paperbacks “An Episode of Sparrows”) is being released on January 12, 2010, on the Parliament of Trees label

On their new release The Paperbacks continue their exploration of powerful and unlikely lyrical topics. While their previous CD, “An Illusion Against Death,“ questioned the role of art in the life of the artist, “Lit From Within” examines more fully the motivations behind art and activism, their parallels, and the effect of each on the health of the practitioner. Opener Good Lives (For Bad Reasons) looks at a moment of crisis for a veteran social activist (“You’ve had a hard life for noble reasons, and it’s not clear what that’s worth…”), and from there, the 32 song set travels through distractions, addictions, death, abuse and faithlessness to ultimately find its way back to a sense of strength, purpose and recommitment. The sonic adventurousness is not lost beneath the intensity of the subject matter; the band, propelled by McNabb’s masterful production, takes incredible risks and pushes hard in as many directions as the running time allows

“Lit From Within” marks the debut of the Paperbacks new line-up. Remaining from the original group are songwriter Doug McLean, and bassist Jaret McNabb. They are joined by guitarist Kevin Andrechuk, drummer Corey Biluk and Kevin McLean on keyboards. "Lit From Within" also features an impressive cast of guest musicians including Jahmeel Russell (Projektor, Kittens), Alison DeGroot, and Rosalyn Dennett (both members of Oh My Darling), Mike Koop (The Bonaduces, The Kicker), Andrew Filyk (Anthem Red, The City Champs) and Ian LaRue.

The Paperbacks, August 2009 shows.

The Paperbacks have a fun plan for August but first, don't forget the upcoming Bonaduces reunion show at the Albert on July 25th.

So Winnipeg, check this out, our old friend Jack has invited us, The Paperbacks, to take up a Tuesday night residency at his Lo Pub. Every Tuesday night in August we are going to debut 8 songs from our new album, a different 8 each week until we've rocked the whole double album. We'll also dust off a bunch of classics from our first two records and maybe throw in a few newer ones as well. So needless to say we have a busy July getting together roughly somewhere around 57 songs for these shows. At some of the gigs, if not all, we will have a special out of town guest to open the night. Animal Names, from Vancouver, will open up on August 4th. Cover will be a Lo $6 each night.

Following our Lo Pub marathon we'll be heading out on a Mini Prairie Tour to see our friends in Regina, Calgary and Edmonton.

By the way, Calgary, Sled Island Festival, Thank you again! So much! We had an amazing time last month and we look forward to coming back in August to play Broken City on the 28th. A special thanks to Beatroute and Mint records for inviting us to play their Sled Island Hangover Breakfast.

More details on all these August shows as we get them...

Details on our new double album, Lit From Within, coming soon.
