The Parsnip Revolt

Our story begins in Philadelphia, 2005. Disgruntled and contemplating retirement from band life, Geremiah Giampa found himself bored but not quite ready to throw in the towel just yet. Although a bass player his entire musical career, he decided to pick up the guitar and began writing his own songs. The result was a solid collection of songs that were well crafted and original, filled with emotion and melodic purity. As one song after another took form, he conjured up an imaginary band to hide himself behind. The band name came to him after reading that "Until the potato arrived from the New World, its place in dishes was occupied by the parsnip." Fearful of a possible parsnip extinction, it seemed the only obvious choice was "The Parsnip Revolt," though other instruments were needed to form an actual band.

Geremiah's vision soon started to take shape in the summer of 2006, when he stumbled upon drummer Gary Lebiedzinski and bassist Sasha Tolstoshev. Gary's background in jazz and Sasha's bass skills & vocal harmony helped to establish the original Parsnip Revolt sound early on.

Jake Williams, a guitarist also disgruntled from band life, was looking to branch out from his solo project "Sun Tired." Jake expressed interest in playing with The Parsnips after hearing their demos, but the band decided to trudge on as an acoustic trio. A month or so later, Geremiah emailed Jake and decided to give him a shot. Jake's guitar playing turned out to be perfect for the band; playing for the songs to add color and texture, while refraining from flashy solos. With only one rehearsal under their belt as a four piece, the band played Grape Street Philadelphia later that same week to a favorable crowd response.

At the close of 2006, Gary and Sasha left to pursue other musical and educational interests. Jake and Geremiah forged on as an acoustic duo and used the time to write new songs. Deciding to reinvent themselves as a trio, Geremiah picked up the bass again and Jake reworked the songs for one guitar. Drummer/friend Tom Mellon got the boys back on their feet playing a couple of shows while they searched for a permanent replacement. In April of 2007, drummer Doug Holton came in and blew the Parsnips away at their first rehearsal. Doug's creative beat choices and musical mind were the perfect fit for the band's evolving sound.

In the short time The Parsnip Revolt have been together, they've managed to create quite a buzz around town. Origivation Magazine nominated The Parsnip Revolt for Best New Local Philadelphia Band. Two songs from their self-titled EP have consistently been in the top 10 of the GarageBand Philly charts. They've been featured on several radio broadcasts, podcasts, and most recently on both the 2007 Millennium Music Conference and Acoustic Philly Festival compilation CDs.
