About

THE PERSPECTIVE OF DISAPPEARANCE
Performer: Amy Horvey, trumpet

In "The Perspective of Disappearance" the solo trumpet is used as a laboratory for a performative journey through the architecture of the instrument's acoustic identity - an attempt to rethink the concept of "trumpet" from a different perspective, farther from the cultural idea of "what the trumpet is" and closer to its acoustical properties. Exciting new repertoire by composers from both Canada and abroad create an engaging concert experience including Giacinto Scelsi's Quattro Pezzi per Tromba, a work by Cecilia Arditto inspired by the notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, and a theatrical work by Canadian composer Ryan Purchase based on an anecdote by Russian humorist Daniil Kharms.

Program:

Giacinto Scelsi: Quattro Pezzi per Tromba (1956)
Cecilia Arditto: Mùsica Invisible (2005)
Isak Goldschneider: Cartoon Demon (2006)
Ryan Purchase: Apparatus Inconcinnus (2006)

Amy Horvey is well-known as a trumpeter both in her native country and abroad. She has presented her work at the Vancouver International Jazz Festival, the Holland Festival, Open Space Victoria New Music Series, Soundstreams Canada, National Arts Center, and Kraakgeluiden Amsterdam. In 2006 Amy toured Canada presenting solo recitals of contemporary repertoire, and was invited by Dave Douglas to be a featured soloist at the Festival of New Trumpet (FONT) Music in New York City. Her recent projects include a work for trumpet and toy instruments, "The Queen of the Music Boxes", and participation in the 2007 Chosen Vale International Trumpet Seminar and the 2007 Lucerne Festival Academy with Pierre Boulez. She is a frequent performer with Capital Brassworks and a member of the Baroque brass ensemble Orikalkum. In May 2008 she performed a solo tour of Italy.

Amy received her Bachelor's Degree from the University of Victoria, Canada and her 2nd phase Diploma from the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. She also studied with Vincent Cichowicz at the National Youth Orchestra of Canada.
