The Sterns

Boston based quintet The Sterns exemplify the knack for masterful song craft, strapping studio work ethic and a get-in-the-van-and-go DIY mentality. Sinners Stick Together released nationally on March 13th, 2007 by Boston's Omnirox Entertainment, showcases The Sterns' deft lyrical turn of phrase and sonic anglophilia, melding the best elements of The Kinks, The Clash, Belle and Sebastian and The Smiths.

Sinners Stick Together is the ambitious follow up to 2005's Say Goodbye to the Camera. This self-released debut brought critical accolades and a supporting slot with The Romantics, Nightmare of You, Hard-Fi and the English Beat, in addition to cracking the CMJ Top 200 album chart. The Sterns supported their album with a string of raucous live shows before returning to recording in December 2005.

Co-produced by Richard Marr (whose credits include Sebadoh, Mary Timony and Gigolo Aunts) Sinners Stick Together expands their tongue-in-cheek world weary wit and shimmering anxious guitar pop to include idiosyncratic narratives and lush chamber-pop arrangements.

The Sterns' Chris Stern, Alex Stern, Michael Sixx, Emeen Zarookian and Andrew Sadoway all thought a lot about the current administration and its policies while working on their album. All Saints is a case in point, speaking to the Bush administration's disheartening state of affairs. "That is as close as we are going to get to an anti-war statement," explains Chris. "It is not our intention to get people marching in Washington, but it is a song and topic we are passionate about." Alex feels, "It is a song that laments death related to war, but it's ultimately open to interpretation, heady stuff for heady times".

The band is not averse to humor either, as evidenced on Supreme Girl, one of the many shimmering power pop numbers on Sinners Stick Together. "That's actually a love song written from the perspective of [Supreme Court one-time nominee and Dubya pal] Harriet Myers and George Bush," winks Alex. "She was obviously a bad nominee but I felt a certain amount of sympathy for her."

Alex says, "We do our best to balance jangle pop with a punk rock ethos," of the bands approach to live performance. The Sterns will support their sophomore effort with extensive touring across the U.S. while maintaining a vigorous writing and recording schedule. "We are one of a handful of bands that buck trends, deny gimmickry and refuse to pander," says Chris. "We cull things from different eras and smack 'em all together and I think it works."

"Jangly pop guitar riffs and catchy throwback English-rock vocals fill their sophomore album, Sinners Stick Together but that doesn't mean the Sterns shy away from substance. "All Saints" exudes an anti-war sentiment and the still-whistling-it-hours-after-first-listen "Supreme Girl" is an imagined tongue-in-cheek rendezvous between Supreme Court nominee Harriet Miers and George W. Bush." - SPIN

"Sinners Stick Together, the quintet's second album, is awash in bright and breezy pop music, and drenched in infectious, hook laden choruses, effervescent melodies, chirpy harmonies, and bouncy rhythms" - All Music Guide

Hotline: The Sterns prove to be a class act

The Sterns are coming to a classroom near you.
In the middle of a quick six-date tour through the Midwest two weeks ago, the band took a break from pubs and clubs to throw down at Chicago's DePaul University. But it wasn't in the student union or theater hall - it was in a regular ol' classroom.
"We excel when we're freed from the confines of a proper stage," Chris Stern told the Herald this week.
That's not to say the band doesn't bring it while on elevated platforms.
Chicago and Detroit have warmed up immensely to Boston's jangle-pop savants, and the band also made stops in Brooklyn and Pennsylvania.
"For whatever reason, we get a lot of love from Chicago, and the shows are amazing," Stern said. As for the Detroit show at the Lager House, Stern added, "We played the club over the summer and it was kind of a horror story, but this time the place was packed and we killed."
The band is heading back out for nine dates in February, including a local Feb. 21 gig at Great Scott for the Glass Set's album release party and an all-ages show in Melrose three days later.
Building a reputation with a glistening indie-pop sound that draws on the English Beat, The Smiths and Belle & Sebastian, the Sterns are playing relentlessly in preparation for the national release of its new disc, "Sinners Stick Together." Though currently available via the band's Web site, it'll be re-released through Boston's Omnirox Entertainment on March 13.
Good timing, as the Sterns have four SXSW gigs lined up later that week. So far, no classrooms are on the itinerary.

All Music Guide Review

Review
British pop and politics have long been intertwined, but the rise of AOR in the Sixties created a split in the States, with AM's pop rarely moving beyond candy fluff for the mind, while rock orientated FM delved into more serious subjects. The Sterns, however, are determined to bridge that gap once and for all.

Sinners Stick Together, the quintet's second album, is awash in bright and breezy pop music, and drenched in infectious, hook laden choruses, effervescent melodies, chirpy harmonies, and bouncy rhythms. Like all the best pop bands, The Sterns' songs sound immediately familiar, yet never to the point of suggesting rip-off.

The group's music echoes of the past, it glistens like the '60s, but for every nod to The Beatles, The Beach Boys and The Kinks, there's an equal bow to their '70s and '80s equivalents - The Buzzcocks, The Clash, The Smiths, Belle & Sebastian, and briefly on "Supreme Girl" Madness. This is powerpop for a new now generation.

And for this generation politics is back with a vengeance, intruding everywhere. And so The Sterns confront it head on, but with great wit or an unexpected twist. "Supreme Girl" is a grand example, the Harriet Myers' Supreme Court debacle as seen from George Bush's selfish viewpoint. Nigerian internet entrepreneurs, all suspiciously related to fallen dictators, seem a tad less predatory when seen through the eyes of one of their small children. Be it the abortion battles, the Iraq War ("All Saints", composed pre-invasion), Republicans insistence on painting dissent as treason, and religion, The Sterns tackle all the topics of the moment.

However, if all that's a little too hard to handle, you can always take to your bed and pull the covers over your head "Twenty-Three Hours" a day, or just listen to the clutch of apolitical numbers that celebrate strong women, dismiss (college) degree driven lives, and dive into the autobiographical.

A pop masterpiece whose music is as enticing as its themes are thought-provoking.
