'the switch' are a Toronto based indie band with a sound that's best described as a 60's synth-rock sandwich with no crust. Founding band members Michelle and Izzy discovered a shared love for toast and music while on the road, and after experimenting together for years under the guise of different band names, fate brought them Joni. She added her own unique style to the group along with some much needed height. With the tall quota filled, the only things missing were testosterone and synth, although maybe not in that order. Enter Graeme – the missing piece of the puzzle with superior synth skills, and balls to boot. Three of the four band members deserted their original instrument preferences, and switched it up. Thus 'the switch' was born, and everything fell into place. The stage was set for making music like sweet love with Michelle on lead vocals and bass, Joni on backing vocals and guitar, Izzy on drums and Graeme on synth. With influences like The Breeders, Sonic Youth and 60's girl band The Ronettes, 'the switch' bring a new sound to the local music scene. Their first EP, A day in sleepytown was released in December 2008, and proved they weren't just four pretty faces that look good holding instruments in tight jeans. The album consists of four original tracks. Each has it's own distinct flavour, and all of them leave the audience nodding not only to the beat, but in agreement with the lyrics. Creating simple songs that resonate is the aim of this beard loving quartet who's love of music is fueled by their obsession with power stances and the reverb pedal. 'the switch' are infectious, in a good way.
