Professional Indie Rockers? It's an oxymoron that The Vanish manage to create as they explore issues of identity and social pressure through a boiling fusion of post-punk, nu-wave, and electro. Michael Elmgreen and Peter Enestrom grew up in Sydney, Australia, playing in punk bands together and DJing in nightclubs across the world. However, their musical careers temporarily came to a close after university as they traded in their instruments for a suit-and-tie. Both working at Microsoft in the United States, The Vanish was formed as Elmgreen and Enestrom returned to their musical roots to combine the post-punk era they grew up on with the recent influx of electronic music. Think of it as a blend of The Clash and Daft Punk. Through their music, The Vanish deal with the subjects of identity and authenticity in a seemlingly conforming world. The result is a polished studio album featuring house-influenced basslines, dry guitar chords, building synths, and melodic vocals. The Vanish transform this to a live setting, adding a third member on drums, rocking out with the energy of a Misfits show yet with the dance-floor beats of Justice. Shows in 2009 will span across Australia and the United States.
