Emerging from the Bermuda Triangle of John Mayer Rock, Timberlake Pop, and Kanye West Hip-Hop is Tonye Christopher. With his soaring guitar licks, infectious melodies, and heart thumping rhythms he is sure to keep you coming back for more. With his latest release 'I Dreamt I Was A Rockstar' hitting web stores April 2009, Tonye proves to be an ever evolving artist. However to truly see just how intriguing of an artist Tonye Christopher has become you must first hear the tale of who he once was.
Imagine ... a thirteen year old boy is sitting in a church pew. The church pastor calls the young man to the front of the altar, looks him square in the eye, and declares in front of the entire congregation, “God has given YOU the gift of music!” This young man was not in the choir. He did not play an instrument. In fact the only musical talent that he was aware of was his uncanny ability to hide his Walkman beneath his clothing every church service. So you can imagine the skepticism that he himself was feeling. That thirteen year old boy was Tonye Christopher. Whether you believe his musical prowess is a gift from God or just an overdeveloped musical ear from too many years of blasting that Walkman in his ears, there is absolutely no denying the talents of this young artist.
After five years of touring the Midwest and receiving praises from critically acclaimed singer/songwriter Josh Kelley in 2007, Tonye's sophomore album is finally ready to debut. 'I Dreamt I Was A Rockstar', set to be released in early April 2009, mixes a futuristic R&B sound with elements of pop, rock, and folk. The collection of songs is a pop album fueled by pop culture. “Every song on the album is inspired by something, someone, or somewhere that you hear being talked about in celebrity gossip blogs; and how I felt it related to me.”
Thematically the album topics are as conflicted as pop culture itself. In the song 'Kanye Komplex' Tonye playfully declares himself to be the new king of pop music, but the title track 'I Dreamt I Was A Rockstar' spells out his fears of getting to the top and discovering just how lonely it really is. He thanks Timbaland and Justin Timberlake for making club anthems that get the ladies on the dance floor in 'Blow.' Three songs later in 'One Night At The Hilton' Tonye laments about the guilt and remorse associated with a one night stand. Throughout the album he mentions infatuations with celebrities like Jennifer Anniston, Jessica Alba, and Scarlett Johansson. In the song 'Love Actually' he soulfully croons to women of the world “You're perfect just the way you are/You're way to pretty to dye your hair a Hollywood blond.” These juxtapositions not only represent Tonye Christopher as an artist, but even more so as a human being. “I just wanted to make an album that conveyed that although I do dream of being a star, I always strive to be a good man. Hopefully that's what I did.”
Tonye is also releasing a John Mayer cover album this April, “Under Covers With John Mayer.” The album will feature songs such as Gravity, Daughters, Waiting On The World To Change, and many more. It is being distributed with 'I Dreamt I Was A Rockstar' as a dual album.
