-The Holy Spirit-
I. What is the Holy Spirit?

a.	This is certainly a good question for us to ask. But before we start to answer it, does anyone have a problem with the question I asked? How about the phrasing? I should have asked, who is the Holy Spirit and not what is the Holy Spirit. So first thing we can do right now is mark out what, and I want you to actually mark it out and put who above it so that you’ll remember that it was a bad way to ask the question. That will help us to remember that we are not talking about a power, or a force, or a feeling, no we are talking about a person of the trinity. It’s kind of like if I had asked What is Jesus Christ? Or what is the Father? That question sounds really funny. So, let’s try to answer this question who is the Holy Spirit.

i.	The Holy Spirit is God.

1.	There is a very dangerous mindset out there that has to do with the Holy Spirit. When Nick preached about the Holy Spirit a little while ago he made a big deal about a mistake that a lot of people make. He said that he can’t stand it when people call the Holy Spirit an “it” because what they should call Him is a “He”. The Holy Spirit is a He just as much as the Son is a He and the Father is a He. Like I said earlier, we don’t call Jesus an it because He is a person, and so is the Holy Spirit. And I want to give you three reasons why He’s a He and not an it. The first reason will come from Matthew 28:19-20. You see that here the Holy Spirit is put on an equal playing field with the Father and the Son. He’s not the 3rd string of the trinity. No He is fully God just like Jesus Christ and the Father are fully God. So don’t be tricked into thinking anything otherwise. I think a lot of the times when we call the Holy Spirit an it we think that He is just a power but the Holy Spirit is not just a power and here is the second really good reason why. You don’t have to go there but in Acts 10:38 Peter tells of how “God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power.” So if the Holy Spirit means power then we have to read it like this…”God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with power and power”. That doesn’t really make much sense. So let’s be convinced right now that the Holy Spirit is as much God as the Father and the Son and that He is fully God.

II)	What are the actions of the Holy Spirit?

a.	I doubt if we had the rest of the day that I could tell you all the actions of the Holy Spirit. So this isn’t going to be a complete list. But hopefully we’ll get an idea of how important the Holy Spirit is for us as believers. Studying and coming to know Him more this week has helped me to love Him more and want to need Him more. So I’m hoping we’ll see how great and needed He is for us.

i.	He causes rebirth: John 3:5-8. Most of us are probably pretty familiar with the story of Nicodemus. He wanted to know how a man could be born again if he was already born. But what he didn’t understand was that when Jesus was saying “born again” he was talking about being saved from a life of sin and eternity in hell. Nicodemus didn’t get that. So in this passage Jesus is talking about getting saved. He’s talking about rebirth which is known in theology as regeneration. We will study what regeneration means later on in this book but for right now we want to look about how the Holy Spirit is active in saving people. The only reason anyone we know is saved is because the Holy Spirit has wished that it would be that way and has caused them to be born again so that they can enter the kingdom of heaven. Think about what this means. When we share the gospel, the only way the person we are sharing it with will hear us out and believe is if the Holy Spirit causes them to be born again. When pastor Nick preaches on Sunday mornings or Brett on Sunday nights, the only reason anyone will get saved through the hearing of the gospel is if the Holy Spirit moves in their hearts to cause them to be born again so that they can one day enter the kingdom of heaven. The only reason I am saved is because this Holy Spirit has caused me to be able to see and hear with eyes and ears that can understand the truth of the message that Jesus Christ brought. If that doesn’t help us realize how much we need Him then I don’t know what well. Because we know that the work of the Holy Spirit is fully and totally needed in order that people would come to Christ.

ii.	He seals our salvation. Ephesians 1:13-14. So the Holy Spirit causes us to be saved and then He also seals our salvation for us meaning that He guarantees it with Himself. Maybe that was kind of confusing. Someone tell me what else the word “guarantee” means here. What’s your bible say it can also mean? Down payment, that’s right. And what is a down payment? If I were to go out and buy a house I would put a down payment on it by paying for only some of it. And what I would be saying by doing that is ‘hey, I don’t have all the money to buy that house right now. But I want to buy it. And I want to own it. So here is the money I do have to show you how serious I am about having it and if you give it to me then I’ll give the rest to you later’. God has done something similar through the Holy Spirit. He is in a way saying to us ‘Son or daughter, you cannot come to heaven yet. You must live by faith in this world first. And there are more sheep to come to the shepherd before Christ returns. So you must wait. But here is a down payment. The Holy Spirit. God Himself will be with you until you come to receive your final inheritance.’ And we have been “sealed” with this Holy Spirit. When I say sealed what do you guys think of? I think of a sealed envelope, or a sealed treasure chest, or maybe the phrase ‘seal the deal’. But anyway, we know that sealed means secured. It’s not up in the air. And neither is our salvation because we have been sealed with the Holy Spirit. Oh what a great promise we have. Without this promise we would be men without hope. The Holy Spirit is almost an engagement ring to us. All believers make-up what we call the church which is also known as the bride in scripture. And the church of God will one day come to its’ Husband which is Jesus Christ and this bride who is the church will be with Him forever. We will be with Jesus Christ forever someday! Soon the waiting Jesus will no longer wait but will come. But not yet. He has not come yet. But let us praise God now that the powerful Holy Spirit is with us and is for us.

iii.	He bears witness: The scripture for this part of the lesson will come from Romans 8:15-16. So here we see Paul telling the Romans “listen guys, you didn’t get the Holy Spirit to fall back into a life of sin. You have the Holy Spirit to praise God. And this Holy Spirit is bearing witness to your spirit meaning that He’s telling you you’re God’s children.” We all know what it means to be adopted right? Well when we become children of God by being born again to love Him, we are also adopted. We are adopted from our old father Satan and are given a new father who is God. This is also a theology term known as ‘adoption’. But here’s the thing about adoption. Even though we as believers are adopted into God’s kingdom as His children when we are saved, sometimes we can doubt. We may doubt that God would really love us, or really care about us, or want what’s best for us. This could be because we aren’t thinking about the gospel enough. It could also be because we are trying to live in sin comfortably and God’s children can’t do that. But either way things like this can make us seriously doubt if we are God’s children or not… We may say something like this to ourselves ‘God I know you say you love me as a son, but I don’t feel that way. I feel like I’ve been kicked out of your house. I feel as if I’ve shamed you to the point where you don’t love me anymore”. And when God’s true believers start feeling this way that is when they need the Holy Spirit to bear witness to them. To remind them that they are truly God’s children and He does love them and only wants what is best for them. We need Him to remind us that even though we fail, God is faithful and does not fail at whatever He desires to do. And this is what the Holy Spirit does.

iv.	He glorifies Christ. This is by far one of the most glorious things I have run across in my studying of the Holy Spirit. Go to John 16:13-15 and we will see what Jesus tells His disciples about the Holy Spirit. Wow, sit and think about that for a few minutes. Okay so this passage of scripture tells us that the Holy Spirit glorifies Christ because Jesus says Himself “He will glorify me”. How exciting could this possibly be? The Holy Spirit is taking what is Jesus Christ’s, mainly the good news of the gospel, and He is telling it to people everywhere. He’s been doing it for over 2000 years and He continues to do it even right now. He gives humans the most important message and at the same time glorifies Christ by doing this. The Holy Spirit loves this. He loves to glorify Jesus. He wants Him known. It’s why He causes people to be born again, it’s why He gives the message of the gospel power, it’s why He seals our salvation, it’s why He convinces us that we are God’s children. It is all to spread the fame of Jesus Christ’s name. He wants Jesus known and honored and He is always working to shine light on Jesus. Think about the love that the Holy Spirit is showing in doing this. First of all, He wants Jesus glorified and he works to make it happen. Secondly, He wants Jesus Christ’s followers to know, and trust, and hope in the best message ever heard which is the gospel. So, while convincing us that the most important thing we can do is to trust in Jesus, He is also glorifying Jesus. What a display of love to us.

III)	What do I do now?

a.	This is a very good question. Knowing all these things about the Holy Spirit should cause us to do something. It should change the way we live somehow. So here’s three things of application. Before we do that there is one last scripture I want to look at. Check out John 16:7. Think about being one of Jesus’ disciples when He said this. They’re scared because He has said that He’s going away. And Jesus says to them that it’s good for Him to leave them because when He does He will send a “Helper”.

i.	The first part of application is that we can trust the Holy Spirit. If we believe the words of Christ then we can believe these words of Christ when He says that the Helper is of more advantage to us. The Helper is more helpful to us. And the helper wants us to trust Him. Ephesians 4:30 says that we can grieve the Holy Spirit. That’s an interesting word. We may grieve when a family member dies, or we may grieve when we see a friend make a really really bad decision. And the Holy Spirit cares about t followers of Christ so much that He also grieves. It grieves Him to see us ignoring His instruction and doing what is against Him. But it grieves Him because He wants us glorifying Christ. Which is the best thing He could ever want. So let us trust Him.

ii.	We can also worship the Holy Spirit. If you’ve been amazed this morning at the work of the Holy Spirit and are starting to realize how much we need Him and depend on Him then you can worship Him. Don’t hold back from praising Him. He’s worthy of our affection and our thoughts because He is God.

Sunday School: May 31, 2009

	Read chapter 2 [Big Words] of Bitesize Theology…

Introduction: What we want to do this morning is to give some type of introduction to the study of theology so that we can be prepared for what is ahead of us. The study of theology is an exciting, heart-warming, enlightening study. And now that Jonathan has done a great job putting our hearts in preparation, we’re going to look at several questions we need to answer before we begin our studying to give us a foundation. Before we start let’s take a look at Jeremiah 9:23-24.

1)What is theology?

                  a. Page 2505 of the ESV study bible says this concerning theology… “The study of theology is considered by man to be dry, boring irrelevant, and complicated. But for those who want to know God, the study of theology is indispensable. The word “theology” comes from two Greek words, theos(“God”) and logos(“word”). The study of theology is an effort to make definitive statements about God and his implications in an accurate, coherent, relevant way, based on God’s self-revelations. Doctrine equips people to fulfill their primary purpose, which is to glorify and delight in God through a deep personal knowledge of him. Meaningful relationship with God is dependent on correct knowledge of him.”

b.So what does that mean? According to this statement…

i.“Theology is an effort to make definitive statements”: So theology is an attempt to make statements about God that are true. We’re trying to do something here when we study theology. And what we’re trying to do is make some steadfast, unshakable statements about God that are without a doubt 100% true. Basically, we want to know God as best as we can on this earth. We want to know what He has said about His Son, about how we should treat our friends and our enemies, about how the trinity works, about how redemption works. But here’s the deal, raise your hand if you think you can know everything about God. Exactly. That’s why we can’t sit in here and pretend that just because we go through this bitesize theology book that we’re going to arrive at some final knowledge of God. The reason we have to say that we’re only making an effort to make true, sure, solid statements about God is that we’re not going to be able to understand Him completely today, in this class, or even in this lifetime. We’re weak, feeble, foolish men speaking of an infinite, eternal, all-knowing God. So naturally we are going to fall short of understanding Him. We may not always comprehend everything we want to in here. So why even bother about studying theology if we can’t understand God fully? Why bother with it if we’ll never arrive at a final and full understanding? We’ll get to that.

ii.	The second part of this definition we’re going to look at is that the study of theology is “based on God’s self-revelation”. What is God’s self-revelation? Exactly… the bible. And if anyone ever tells you that they can know God apart from this awesome book, then you can be sure that they are wrong. This is God’s breathed out Word and He has provided it not so that we could have a little bit of good advice for life. He has provided it and we would be smart to realize what it means that God breathed this out. If we don’t start gripping what that means our lives will be a lot less fruitful than they could be. We want to take God’s Word and let it construct our view of God. But we must be warned here. The study of Theology is not a better way of explaining the bible. It doesn’t add to it or help it out or anything like that. Scripture is clear and sufficient without us doing anything to it.

2) Why don’t ‘Christians’ study theology?

                a.	It’s difficult

                                       i.	It’s not easy to know God. It’s not easy to study His Word. It takes labor. It does take time. You can’t listen to a 30 second clip from John Piper and know God as much as you should know Him. It’s going to take personal, in-depth, lofty thinking. We don’t grow up with this kind of attitude either. We’ve grown up learning how to read and count through TV shows like Sesame Street and we’ve gone to schools where there are plenty of fancy powerpoint presentations with enough images to catch our attention. In other words we’re used to having other people think for us and then, as gently and as interestingly as possible, spoon feed it to us.

                b.	They’re not interested

                                         i. For most church-goers, there are bigger issues at hand than plain old theology. People want to know 5 ways to fix their marriage, or 13 ways to save money, or funny stories that catch their attention and then a pep-talk about how they can be happier people. This is a problem. This kind of teaching is about people, and not about God. This kind of teaching attempts to show people how to live better and be happier. And while there is a place for it, every Sunday morning from the pulpit should not always be that place. It tends to brings in massive amounts of people to churches every Sunday because many people don’t care about God or what He has to say. They want to think that the main story of this universe is about them and not about God. And they’re dangerously wrong.

3) Why should I study theology?

                 a.	There are an insane amount of answers to this question but I think the first answer is that we want to. Scripture for this will be Philippians 3:7-10… Paul’s deepest desire is to “know him”.

                                         i. Let me give an illustration here. A long time ago I went to preschool here at this church. And the teachers told my mom that I wouldn’t be a very social person because I was always playing by myself. But, occasionally, I would run across another guy who was a loner like me. We would generally latch together but there still wasn’t much talking involved in our relationship. My mom would come to pick me up at the end of the day and I would be so excited to tell her about my one friend that I found. I would tell her about how we played on the playground and made a tent out of towels and so on. She would eventually cut me off and ask me what his name was… ‘Um, I’m not sure’ was my reply. She would start laughing and we all know why. That was comical to her because how could I call this kid my best friend and not even know His name? This is how a lot of Christians are. They’re claiming that they know God, that they love Him, that they would give their life up for Him and yet they don’t want to study His Word to figure out as much as they can about Him. We could even say that they are unfamiliar with Him and yet they love Him? How can this be? We do not want to be like those people. We don’t want to be like the people Paul talks about in Galatians 4:8-11 either… “Formerly, when you did not know God, you were enslaved to those that by nature are not gods. But now that you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God, how can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?” Paul uses some curious phrases here doesn ‘t he? He says “you have come to know God, or rather to be known by God”. Sinclair Ferguson pointed this out at the next conference. The way he words this makes us realize that there is a relationship going on here. We are coming to know God and He is knowing us. But notice also the question Paul asks the Galatians after this. “How can you turn back again to the weak and worthless elementary principles of the world, whose slaves you want to be once more?” He’s saying ‘guys, wake up! You’re telling me you know God. And yet you’re treating the world like a savior again? How can this be?’ Good question, Paul. Let’s hope no one can ever ask us this. Let us be those who want to know God, to be known by Him, and to then live as if that were true.

                  b. It IS relevant

                                         i. Unlike people may think, Theology is very relevant to our everyday lives. It can change the way we think about everything. If someone comes up to us and asks how we feel about abortion, we’re more likely to consider about what God’s Word would say about abortion. So my response to people about abortion is not based on my opinion about how I feel about abortion but more about how God feels about abortion. Theology will help us think of things in this was. It will make us look at creation and instead of thinking to ourselves… ‘there’s a regular old tree, and mountains, and fields’ we’ll start thinking to ourselves Psalm 96:11…‘Let the heavens be glad, and let the earth rejoice; let the sea roar, and all that fills it; let the field exult and everything in it!’ Lord all of this is for your glory and I want to be for your glory as well.” Let’s not be a people who think that our opinion is what is most important. Let’s instead be a people who desire to know what God thinks about every aspect of our lives and then surrender to His opinion always.

4) How do I study theology?

                        a. We’ve already mentioned that we use the Word of God to study theology. What’s cool about this is that we’ve got a book. God gave us the answers in writing. He gave us something solid and dependable. If the question arose in this classroom if Jesus sinned or not then what would you guys do? Would you look into yourself and say “Gee I wonder if Jesus sinned. Well, let me think. I feel like maybe He did so He must of sinned. Right?” Wrong, you would go straight to the Word of God and say with a certainty “Jesus did not sin and I know that He did not sin because it says it right here.” Let us thank God for this rock.

                        b. We should be careful to grow in humility. Look at 1 Peter 5:5… Now let us go to 2 Corinthians 12:7-10. Kevin DeYoung pointed this out about this passage. Notice what Paul says in verse 10. He says that He got this torn in his flesh which is a messenger of Satan so that he would not become conceited or prideful. And then he thanks God for it. Why? Because it is better for a messenger of Satan to terrorize Paul than for Paul to become prideful in his revelations. I mean after all, think about how easy it would be for Paul to become prideful in his lifetime. The Holy Spirit is using him to write the Word of God so I imagine pride could have been an issue for the human Paul. But God gives him a thorn. We must also be careful as we study theology. There arre many who do not like the message that this church brings to the world. But that is no excuse or reason for us to be prideful. If we truly live out the theology that we have learned and will be learning then we will not be people who could be considered prideful. A great God has a way of humbling little men like us so the more we learn about Him the more humbled we should be.

                      c. We should pray. The scripture for this is coming from Psalm 119:18. Who’s got that one memorized? The psalmist here is praying to His God, “Please God, let me see the wonderful things that you have provided in Your Word”. This is a good and necessary prayer for us. Because without the Spirit of God we will not be able to see anything in this Word. It may hit our heads, but without prayer, it will never hit our hearts. We’ll know a lot about God but we will not personally know God if we do not pray. This is what Wayne Grudem had to say about students of theology who do not pray… “No matter how intelligent, if the student does not continue to pray for God to give him or her an understanding mind and a believing and humble heart, and the student does not maintain a personal walk with the Lord, then the teachings of Scripture will be misunderstood and disbelieved, doctrinal error will result, and the mind and heart of the student will not be changed for the better but for the worse.” In other words, theology is dangerous in the hands of people who do not pray.

                      d. We should want to rejoice. Look at Psalm 139:17… “How precious to me are your thoughts, O God!” Hopefully, in our studying, we will have moments where our heart wants to jump out of our chest. That’s good and that should happen. It happened to Paul in Romans 11:33-36... So let us praise God and rejoice when He does answer our prayers by opening our eyes to see something wonderful about Him.

Legalism: A Joyless Trap of False Righteousness

I wrote this paper about Legalism after reading Mahanney's "Living the Cross Centered Life". I wanted to post it because I have experienced legalism and the dangers of it. It is truly, as Galatians claims, a false gospel and I don't want myself or anyone else to live in the power of it. So I figured I'd give what little insight I have to the dangers of legalism....

-Legalism: A Joyless Trap of False Righteousness-
After reading Living the Cross Centered Life there is no way that I could write on any other topic than legalism. "Legalism is essentially self-atonement for the purpose of self-glorification and ultimately for self-worship. It is the pinnacle of pride for me to assume that by my good works I could ever morally obligate God to forgive me, justify me, or accept me," says Mahaney (page 113). I confess that I am a legalist. Not only am I legalist, but I have been extremely blind to this sin for most of my Christian walk. I would say that salvation is by grace alone in a heart beat, but my constant "spinning plates" would reveal something else. I am thankful that this book and many conversations with my brothers in Christ have revealed this awful sin so that I may now be guarded from it. John Piper says this, "Human beings are wired to be legalists. That is, we are wired to trust what we do as the grounds of assurance." I must confess again that I am in the same boat as the people Piper is speaking about here. It seems that I prefer rules, I want to earn grace with obedience, I long to be better than every one of my brothers, and bottom line I seek my own glory. However, this path I attempt to walk is joyless and seems to be graceless. I hate this false gospel that I am attempting to live. I hope in this paper to expose what legalism does in the believer's walk with Christ. It is something that I will struggle with for the rest of my earthly life but I pray that by revealing its roots and effects I will be able to better guard my heart from this vain pursuit.
The first issue with legalism that I would like to speak of is the fact that Legalism says that we do not need a savior. In Legalism the law is our savior and we need no other merit outside of ourselves fulfilling the law in order to come before God as justified. C. J. Mahaney says it well when he says "The implications are staggering, because legalism claims in essence that the death of Jesus on the cross was either unnecessary or insufficient. It says to God, in effect, 'Your plan didn't work. The cross wasn't enough and I need to add my good works to it to be saved"(Page 113). In my unrighteous Legalistic tendencies I have the mindset that my obedience and the law earn me not only favor, but justification before the Father. While my lips may say "Salvation is certainly by grace alone" my attitude says that I must continually be fulfilling all of the commandments of God in His Word in order to keep the favor that was ultimately given to me by God. Let us take a look at what the book of Acts has to say concerning this issue. After a long debate between the Jewish Council dealing with circumcision and salvation Peter stands up and says these freeing words "Brothers, you know that in the early days God made a choice among you, that by my mouth the Gentiles should hear the word of the gospel and believe. And God, who knows the heart, bore witness between us and them, having cleansed their hearts by faith. Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will." (Acts 15:7-11) It is extremely easy for me after reading this scripture to say to myself "Of course you can be saved without being circumcised. Why would the Jewish Council ever for a moment think that Salvation had anything to do with circumcision?" What a hypocritical thought. I say the same thing when I question someone's salvation because they watch MTV or they haven't shared the gospel recently. I also say the same thing that these Jews said when I foolishly come to God with a false sense of merit because I have not watched any television and I have shared the gospel at least five times that week. Peter is clear in what my thought process is opposing here, "But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus" (verse 11). This is such a crushing truth. Of course I would say I believe those words to be true but my outlook is obviously opposing this statement. I must repent of believing that I can continue to earn grace by my obedience to God's Word. The Son of God dying upon a cross is what saves me and is fully sufficient to accomplish what God has purposed for it to do. The cross is where I find my merit because there is none within me. This means that I must set aside my foolish preference of wanting to earn my own merit and simply accept the grace that God has freely given to me.
The second issue that I would like to address concerning Legalism is the dangerous effect that it has between believers. Legalism is undoubtedly going to separate a church body for several reasons. First of all, it is nothing less than a contest for grace. I find, in my own mind, that when I'm deep in my roots of Legalism I will always win this contest. My thought process will dwindle around every conversation I have had that day and I will always turn out to be more holy, more righteous, more obedient, and more worthy of grace than the person I was speaking with (Brett clued me into this mindset). When everyone has this attitude, the church becomes a place where pride becomes abundant between brothers and sisters so much so that salvation will seem as if it means nothing. We will start to say to ourselves "Oh, them, they are only saved. I am saved and then sanctified. Just, look at how much better I am than them. Surely God must look at me with more favor than them." This manifestation of pride will smother brothers and sisters in the faith. Instead of looking at a brother sin as an opportunity to speak graceful words meant to cause restoration, I will look upon a brother with a condemning judgment that is meant to build me up. If the Bride is constantly seeking to outdo one another in seeking God's favor through obedience then she will certainly forget what her Bridegroom has done for her at Calvary.
The last thing I want to address is that Legalism sucks the joy out of our walk with Christ. I love when Mahaney talks about spinning plates. He says, "One by one he (the plate spinner) would carefully position each plate on a rod and give it a furious spin, until the stage was transformed into a small forest of plates, wiggling and swaying on their sticks... The plates we spin are various spiritual activities-such as Bible reading, prayer, or sharing the gospel... We change what God intends as a means of experiencing grace into a means of earning grace. Instead of being a further expression of our confidence in God's saving work in our life, these spiritual activities become simply more spinning plates to maintain" (Pages 114-115). I can understand what Mahaney is talking about here. I have at times found myself striving to spin many plates at once by my own will and power. They all eventually fall and shatter. This is the point when I feel that I can not come to the Father in prayer, worship, or in His Word while in my sin. I feel I must once again strive to be completely obedient and then come to Him for forgiveness. But, I have no reason for this mindset. These familiar words from 2 Corinthians 5:21 destroy all reason to base my justification in Legalism, "For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God." This truth assures me that my righteousness is not found within me or my obedience. It is once again found in the work of Christ on a cross. This truth stirs my soul to joy once again. When all my sin and failures pile up, I can still come before the Father in a robe of righteousness that Christ has bought for me seeking forgiveness. He looks at me as if He was looking at His Son. Those words seem too good to be true. It almost seems dangerous to say them, but this is the truth that will settle my soul and help me to run from the unsatisfying roots of Legalism. My merit is given to be by grace alone. Oh how I hope I put away my "justification to-do list" and simply take my joy in the fact that before God I am currently justified "for if righteousness were through the law, then Christ died for no purpose" (Galatians 3:21). I pray that we would all be restored to the joy of the salvation that Christ has bought for us and given to us without price.
I feel that one passage of scripture will be best to mention to end with. Isaiah 55:1-2 gives this wonderful invitation that we must all accept "Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price, Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen diligently to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food." God has called us all to come. He does not ask us to bring our filthy rags with us. He "knows our frame; he remembers that we are dust" (Psalm 103:14). I hope I can simply accept this invitation to come to His feast covered in His own Son's blood. This is the root of joy. This is where we realize that Legalism holds no value for our souls and that grace is the greater and only source of salvation.
