History of TheRoot42.org

TheRoot42.org, born in late 2001, started as a collaboration between Ben Barry and Ian Shannon who had been members on the now defunct DesignsByMark forum. There are also others who lent their support and helped us grow. Originally a public art and design forum, TR42 decided to transition to application only. While making the forum exclusive was a laborious decision, it increasingly improved the quality of work and sense of community. Since its inception, the forum had always been run on vBulliten - however in 2004 TR42 decided to take in a different direction. It was then that a few members started to design and build a new forum from the ground up to accommodate our specific community needs. It took a solid 2 years to complete, but the time has eventually come! A well deserved congratulations goes to the programming work of Rob Mason.

With the launch of this new forum, TR42 also decided to run the cost of hosting based off of member donations. Within a few short days, our community raised enough funds to support the forum for at least a couple of years. We have truly become a fantastic and tight-knit community, a home away from home if you will, and is a part of many of our daily lives. This community has grown so much together that it will surely be a spectacle to see where each of us are in just a few short years.

In summer of 2006, TR42 held its second annual RootMeet in Seattle, Washington. ~40 members attended from all over the United States – one can only imagine what the turnout will be next time.
