Brought to life with all the dark love in the world: A futuristic vision of Dark Ambient
There are not many releases which have me saying ,,wow" after unpacking them from their postal parcel, but this one certainly hit a spot: A 3'' Mini CD packaged inside a pitchblack envelope, which in turn comes attached to a smooth, almost silken and glossy heavy foto paper pack which perfectly brings out the intensively glowing colours on the front and the rune-like scribbles on the inside. Limited to just under 100 copies and brought to life with all the dark love in the world, this is one of those precious little gems some people will soon kill for to obtain a copy. For now, it is an insider tip that will have Dark Ambient fans thirsty for more. The very fact that Vestigial has managed to secure distribution deals with about every big mail order on the scene speaks for itself. And it becomes even more impressive, if one considers that his style is not an easy copy of the output of some of his personal favourites, which can be vaguely positioned in the corner of the Canadian Cyclic Law label (which has acted as a catalyst of the genre in the recent past). Certainly, this EP is more upfront, direct and in-your-facen then anything his colleagues have produced of lately and even though the typical distant strings turn up for an autumnly requiem, they are not burried under piles of reverb-laden rubble-layers. Deep analog tones, oscillating and pulsating like black blood inside a gnome's juggular form the backbone of the pieces, above which deformed spoken word contributions, tortured animal screetchings or extremely sparsely dosed machinal noises reside. In stark contrast, there is always a texture of harmonics floating disembodied and like a dead angel's voice in a space of its own, rubbing against the darker textures and exacerbating the uneasy ambiance. For entire minutes, the atmospheres' loose ends are left hanging in the air like broken cables touching an infinite sea, throwing sparks in random patterns, before a sudden assault of delayed metal poundings comes crashing in, waking you from your fever dreams. These rough transitions lend a certain live feeling to the music, which is noticeably absent from other compositions and which makes Vestigial stand out from the fold - his vision of Dark Ambient is certainly more futuristic and filled with weird and frightening beasts, instead of hallow pathways and empty landscapes. It will be interesting to see how this vision translates to a full-length CD, as the trap of this turning tedious is certainly there. But for now, the perfectly measured length of this EP matches the beauty of its packaging...

Despite the gimmicky nature of his release which is a mini CD both in the traditional and literal sense, Vestigial appears to be one of the more promising acts lurking under the dark ambient radar. This could be as a result of a lack of publicity - but if a tagline is needed than "the best album never released by Cold Meat Industry" would be apt. Think of the newer ambient orientated acts on CMI's roster - Letum, Foundation Hope, Atrium Carceri, et al and imagine them melded together and distilled into their darkest and most disturbing essence and that should provide a rough idea of Vestigial's predominant sound. This perception is supported through a combination of the dominant murky atmosphere, muffled and manipulated voices, synthetic strings, drones and a few bursts of static. Not that these elements or any combination thereof are limited to the Cold Meat roster, just that the particular combination utilised is strongly reminiscent of a particular sound on a particular label. For a demo, this is quite a strong listen and if Heathen Harvest had an "unsigned artist of the month" section, Vestigial would be a nominee. But there is always more work to be done and while Vestigial clearly delights in creating soundscapes as dark as the desert at night, he would do well to hone that talent for claustrophobic atmospherics into something that can be identified clearly as belonging under the Vestigial banner.

Wenig ist bekannt über die italienische Ambientformation Vestigial, die mit der Mini-CDr 'Aeon' ein beachtliches Debüt hinlegen. Kleinformatig, aber mit sorgsam gestaltetem Cover bietet der Tonträger 4 düster-atmosphärische Soundscapes apokalyptischer Art. Einen Hinweis findet man mit Andreas Wahnmann, der die Musik gemstert hat, und selbst die Elektro-Ritual-Band Fir§t Law betreibt. In die Richtung der Loki-Foundation-Bands geht auch Vestigial mit lange hallenden Sphären, dunklem Grollen, unvermittelten Momenten der Ruhe und undefinierbaren Vocals und Schreien, die den Äther durchziehen. Ein schönes und auch technisch überzeugendes Debüt, das auf das erste Album hoffen lässt. Thematisch passt die kosmisch-esoterische Thematik von 'Aeon' durchaus zum genannten Label.

Every once in a while people contact me and ask me to send a demo or promotional copy from something they did. And in most cases I forward them to the office beause in that way all reviewers can get an equal chance on reviewing the item. But in some cases the artist has set his or her mind on sending something to me and there are chances I submit (drones, dark ambient, avant-gardistic stuff, you know my taste).

If the result is good, the review - albeit a demo or just a CD-r - will find its way over to the webzine. I recall previous reviewed demo-releases from Grimbergen and Thermidor receiving good credits. And now another dark ambient title can be added to this small but worthwile list.

The Italian project Vestigal with his first release - a black 3" CD-r - fully caught me by surprise. Released under his own management, under the alias New Sun Recordings, this is a musically high standard, well taken care of, nicely printed and designed product.

With tracktitles like 'Last Extinction Prayer', 'The Grey Constellation', 'Dagda Rising' & 'Celebrating The New Sun' you already notice the darkness of the content. And if I write that it should be considered in the same style as Lustmord, Tho-So-Aa, Blood Box and The Anti Group Communication I KNOW Vestigial will get your eyes' and ears' attention.

Now ... When is the first fulltime CD coming up ?!

In a sort of odd way I've noticed a lot of dark ambient and experimental artists have names starting with V. Think about it for a sec; Veiled Illusions, Veinke, Verhören, The Victims Shudder, Vinterriket, Mike VanPortfleet, VLE, Vomit Orchestra, Vond, etc., and now Vestigial. I'm sure it's nothing more than a strange coincidence, but it was still an interesting observation I thought.

Hailing from Italy and directed by sole member |:Y:|, Vestigial is a dark ambient project with minimal noise, industrial, and experimental tendencies. Limited to just 99 copies this little 3" CDr four tracker is going to be a much revered recording in the future. The first thing to know about Vestigial is that when I say it's dark, I do mean its really dark sounding! Lots of ambient artists tend to receive the dark ambient tag by default, but ask yourself how many of these artists actually invoke feelings of utter darkness and fear through their music. This is what I really enjoyed about these twenty three minutes of music is that the whole recording is very creepy and kept me hanging on for the entire experience. Vestigial is much like a good horror movie as I wait for the big climax where one of the characters of the film gets attacked by some sort of ghastly creature. However like most horror movies the heroes of the film conquers the enemy at the end, but with Vestigial it seems like all is lost at the end and the enemy has won this time.

The synthesizers remain darkened and mysterious throughout this recording and normally melodic too, as distant voices, backward speeches, inhuman growls, samples, and noisy industrial sounds appear throughout these four songs. The effect is outright spine-chilling to say the least and thoroughly engaging. Like a slow descent through hell or some sort of unholy forsaking colony where the sun never sets, Vestigial is up to something delightfully evil on 'Aeon.'

With nothing to complain about I can honestly say this is one of the best experimental ambient releases I've heard in awhile. Additionally I'd say try picking up a copy of this recording as soon as possible because I have a feeling they are going to disappear quickly once word spreads on this band.

L'Italie nous a souvent prouvé qu'elle était un véritable vivier de scènes éclectiques et de personnalités incroyablement talentueuses. Et ça n'est pas la qualité époustouflante de cette première apparition de Vestigial qui démontrera le contraire. Affichant d'emblée une filiation avec notamment la dark-ambient distillée par la Loki Foundation (Inade, Predominance) et des entités telles que les rituels Tho-So-Aa ou les très cinématographiques Golgatha, Vestigial se paie en outre le luxe d'évoquer l'ombre de Lustmord sans complexe aucun (le mastering d'Andreas Wahnmann de Turbund Sturmwerk/Fir§t Law jouant très certainemnt pour beaucoup). Et il n'y aurait vraiment pas de quoi tant la profondeur et la justesse des nappes laisse pantois. Les basses sont à leur juste place, sans exagération mais se manifestent à bon escient tandis que les samples, puisés dans un héritage industriel solide, agrémentent les 4 compositions, leur donnant autant de souffle épique que de variations intéressantes et surtout maîtrisées.

Nella musica non c'è mai nulla di nuovo, certo, ma nel dark ambient è davvero troppo facile ascoltare dischi identici tra loro e con lo stesso modello di riferimento, visto che realizzare tutto in casa pare ormai molto semplice e mettere su una cd-r label anche. Tutto questo è positivo, perché vuol dire che finalmente chiunque può esprimersi, ma, come se ne sarà discusso mille volte, non è che chiunque divenga artista nel momento in cui possiede gli strumenti dell'artista (o potenzialmente siamo tutti creativi? Non c'è risposta). Una simile premessa per la recensione di un mini cd-r dark ambient di ascendenza lustmordiana sembra già una condanna. Invece no. Vale ancora la pena setacciare l'underground, anche se è più difficile. Vestigial esordisce con un dischetto dai moltissimi pregi, a partire dalla confezione molto ricercata, con un'immagine di copertina suggestiva (anche se qualcuno storcerà il naso a priori per l'abuso di Photoshop), e da un suono eccelso, merito anche del mastering - non è un caso - di Andreas Wahnmann, cioè Turbund Sturmwerk/First Law. Le quattro tracce, che rimandano appunto a Lustmord e alla Cold Meat Industry delle origini, non dicono qualcosa di nuovo, ma lo dicono con forza: con "Last Extinction Prayer" si fa subito buio pesto, si riesce a vedere solo qualche nota violacea di tastiera, "The Grey Constellation" parte col classico rigurgito alla Heresy e rimane impressa per via del gracchiare di non si sa quale osceno volatile, "Dagda Rising" all'inizio e alla fine sembra la più aerea delle quattro, ma in mezzo è schiacciata al suolo, infine "Celebrating The New Sun" satura le nostre orecchie di rumori e inquietudini. Nerissimo e primordiale, Aeon procurerà a Vestigial un'etichetta importante. Buona fortuna, ma non ne ha bisogno.

Vestigial est un nouveau venu d'Italie, qui se réclame influencé par le "son" Loki Foundation, et donc par des artistes comme Inade, Herbst9 ou Predominance. Si j'ajoute que ce MCD 3" a été masterisé par Andreas Wahnmann alias Fir§t Law qui s'occupe déjà du mastering des releases du label allemand, vous comprendrez pourquoi Vestigial ne sonne absolument pas comme un débutant.

Pour s'en convaincre il suffit d'écouter le premier titre : un son ample et magistral, des basses qui vous scotchent, des vocaux lointains à la Predominance, avec une touche de rituel à la Herbst9, et un mélange nappes mélodieuses/sonorités tectoniques industrielles détonnant. "The Grey Constellation", de par son aspect majestueux, rappelle bien plus les maîtres Inade et Lustmord, ce qui n'est pas un mal, surtout avec un tel son. Les deux autres titres sont plus posés et moins industriels mais tout aussi intéressants, et ne donnent qu'une seule envie : découvrir l'italien sur un album longue durée.

Vestigial a donc réussi son entrée sur la scène dark ambient : "Aeon" est un MCD bluffant, autant par le son que par la qualité des compositions. Il ne lui reste plus qu'à prouver son talent sur un album longue durée, et à mieux digérer ses influences encore très marquées. Limité à 100 exemplaires dans une digisleeve format 3".

Guter Dark Ambient-Debütant und dennoch alles wie immer

Dark-Ambient ist ja bekanntlich so ein Metier, bei dem es auf Individualität nicht sonderlich ankommt, wenn es also hier einem neuen Künstler gelingt, eine Klanglandschaft zu erschaffen, die einem der führenden Vertreter des Genres, beispielsweise LUSTMORD oder INADE, sehr ähnlich ist, wäre dies kein Grund zum Nase rümpfen, sondern vielmehr etwas was tendenziell für Qualität spräche. VESTIGIAL, das italienische Projekt, das hier kurz vorgestellt werden soll, ist ein klassisches Beispiel dafür. Ihre Debüt Mini-3"-CD ,,Aeon" ist knapp 25 Minuten lang, und während dieser Zeit passiert absolut nichts, woran man nun so etwas wie einen ureigenen VESTIGIAL-Sound, eine eigene Note, festmachen könnte und dennoch darf man ihr Debüt als ausgesprochen gelungen bezeichnen. Dieses Gesichtslose fängt dann, wenn man's genau nimmt, auch schon beim Namen des Minialbums an. ,,Aeon", genauso hieß bereits das Vollzeit-Debütalbum des australischen Dark-Ambient Projektes TERRA SANCTA, welches 2004 über MALIGNANT RECORDS erschien, zu recht überaus gute Kritiken einstecken konnte und atmosphärisch in genau die gleiche Kerbe schlug, wie nun VESTIGIAL. Ein Jahr vorher debütierten TERRA SANCTA bereits mit einer Mini-CD im Eigenverlag, ganz haargenauso wie VESTIGIAL nun vier Jahre später.

,,Äeon" ist im allgemeinen eine Bezeichnung für Weltzeitalter, meist gebräuchlich in einem esoterischen Sinne, somit ist auch schon einmal klar, dass der VESTIGIAL-Ambient eher ,,kosmischer"-Natur ist, d.h. im Sinne des berühmten Kopfkinos haben wir es hier nicht mit aufspringenden Sargdeckeln und verwunschenen Spukschlössern zu tun, sondern mit Reisen durch Raum und Zeit, die ambientmusikalisch untermalt werden. Die Hörerfahrung lehrt, dass solche ,,kosmischen" Ambientprojekte eigentlich immer jenen Spuk-Ambient-Projekten qualitativ vorzuziehen sind, vielleicht weil bei ihnen das ,,Dunkle" des ,,Dark"-Ambient eher einen ernsthaft-natürlichen Charakter bekommt, während die Spukprojekte, so ,,düster" sie sich selbst mitunter auch empfinden mögen, immer eher etwas von Kasperletheater haben, und das wollen wir ja nicht, oder? Die internationalen Champions jenes kosmischen Dark-Ambients mit Wurzeln in der ,,Industrial Culture" sind seit vielen Jahren in Leipzig ansässig, gemeint ist natürlich der Musikverlag der LOKI FOUNDATION. Wenn nun also ein Dark-Ambient Projekt, welches den Wandel der Äonen musikalisch untermalen will, gut ist, wird es so klingen, dass man sich ihre Musik auch eben dort in Leipzig veröffentlicht vorstellen kann. Bei VESTIGIAL trifft genau das zu, sie klingen zwar weder vollständig nach INADE noch nach HERBST 9, dafür besitzen beide deutschen Projekte einen zu großen Wiedererkennungswert, dennoch platzieren sich VESTIGIAL bewundernswert treffsicher genau dazwischen, aber in diesem "Dazwischen" sitzt tragischerweise auch schon IONOSPHERE. VESTIGIALs Ambient besitzt genau das gleiche aufwühlende Element, welches einem von INADE vertraut ist, man aber auch von BAD SECTOR kennt, die ja ebenfalls aus Italien sind. Dunkles Grollen, verzerrte Stimmfetzen, Ansätze dramatisch-tragischer Melodien, verlorene Momente, Hall und dann gut gesetzte verzerrte Ausbrüche, die mitunter durchaus brutal wirken können. Es ist jedoch alles computergeneriert, Feldaufnahmen, akustische Instrumente Fehlanzeige. VESTIGIAL scheinen gut aufgepasst zu haben und verbinden die besten Momente von INADE, HERBST 9, LUSTMORD, RAISON D'ETRE und BAD SECTOR zu etwas völlig...ja völlig Uneigenem. Um die Parallele zu TERRA SANCTA nochmals aufzugreifen, die sich ja anbietet, weil ,,Aeon" als Name schon signalisiert, dass man das gleiche will, VESTIGIAL ist ihre Äoneninterpretation noch ein Stück weit besser gelungen als den Australiern. Im direkten Vergleich liegt im VESTIGIAL-Ambient weitaus mehr Dramatik, während TERRA SANCTA minimalistischer sind und damit der ursprünglichen Ambient-Idee, Hintergrundmusik zu bieten eigentlich näher kommen. Fazit: Man darf gespannt sein, welches Label in Zukunft mit VESTIGIAL arbeiten wird. In erster Linie würde sich schon die LOKI FOUNDATION anbieten, vor allem weil bereits gewisse Kontakte bestehen. ANDREAS WAHNMANN (FIR§T LAW) produzierte die Mini-CD, der Mann also, der auch seit einiger Zeit alle LOKI-Projekte produziert und somit für den Labelsound mit-, wenn nicht hauptverantwortlich ist. Wenig überraschen würde mich jedoch auch eine Zusammenarbeit mit TESCO oder ihren Landsleuten von EIBON, welche mit CAUL bereits ein us-amerikanisches Dark-Ambient Projekt verlegten, das mit VESTIGIAL auch ganz gut zu vergleichen wäre. Weiterhin in Frage kämen natürlich die üblichen Verdächtigen MALIGNANT und MANIFOLD. Labels wie CYCLIC LAW, COLD MEAT INDUSTRY oder ETERNAL SOUL empfände ich für VESTIGIAL schon weit weniger passend. So unterschiedslos Dark-Ambient mitunter auch ist, zu unterscheidende Labelsounds und Labelphilosophien gibt es dennoch.

VESTIGIAL bieten anspruchsvollen Dark Ambient-Hörgenuss für Kenner. Man kann sie sogar auf Anhieb zu dem exklusiven Club der Allerbesten zählen, aber, wie ich versucht habe darzulegen, verpasst man tragischerweise trotzdem eher weniger, wenn man dieses aufstrebende italienische Projekt nicht kennenlernen möchte oder genauer: Man verpasst guten Dark-Ambient, aber sicher nicht eine bisher unbekannte atmosphärische Nuance. Eigentlich reichen die besten Alben, der sagen wir mal vier besten Dark-Ambient Projekten eigener Wahl für eine gut sortierte Sammlung völlig aus, alles darüber hinausgehende beginnt der pure Luxus zu sein. Dark ambient is a difficult genre. This could sound a stupid sentence because everyone with a computer and a decent sound card is able to growl into a mic and to sample some CDs, but in the same sentence you can find the naked truth, because if everyone could be good at making industrial or ambient music the difficult part is represented by giving a good ambience to the recording itself. Vestigial, fortunately for my ears, is really good at making sound his music involving and disturbing thanks to the good mixture of pads, reverbered vocals and treated noises. The four tracks of his first MCD remembered me something of Lustmord of the "Paradise disowned" period. The grinding sub-tones and the cyclic synth sounds form suites where the concept of the "sun that never sets" take form.

Are you tired of dark ambient? The only idea of listening to another Raison d'être-wannabe or Lustmord clone makes you puke? Then do yourself a favour and try Vestigial's debut. This CD 3" comes as a much welcome surprise in a scene where ideas seems to have abandoned the new generations, leaving behind only a bunch of the old prime-movers to keep trying something original. The interesting part is that this rather mysterious project comes from southern Italy, a land stereotypically associated with sun, hot weather and good mood. One of Cold Meat Industry's early slogans was "the perfect cure for a silly smile". Vestigial could perfectly work in that sense.

The first thing that strikes the attention is the highly personal and accurate package of this release: the CD, a black 3", is hold inside a dark glossy gatefold sleeve, with an evocative graphic elaboration on the front and unidentified, disturbing shapes on the inside, which are also reproduces on a small handmade insert to be found inside the inner sleeve. It wouldn't come as a surprise if each of the 99 copies had a different insert. Such interesting presentation introduces the listener to a not less exciting musical content: the four tracks included in this debut release clearly show the artist's influences and his ability to elaborate and combine them, forging a personal style.

Opening "Last Extinction Prayer" is a powerful galactic symphony, with sampled and filtered voice samples shifting upon a powerful mass of sound, solemn industrial thuds and a funereal keyboard melody. Bad Sector's "Ampos" and Les Joyaux De La Princesse come to mind, yet you would never confuse this track for either of the two, since there are just small elements that could have been inspired by their music. Same thing for "The Grey Constellation", with its Tibetan mantras and noise crackling, which could remember of certain parts in Raison d'être's "Enthraled By The Wind Of Loneliness", and "Dagda Rising", where Lustmord's "The Place Where The Black Stars Hang" remains distant, somewhere in the background. Again, these excellent compositions feed on their influences, assimilating them and giving birth to unexpected sceneries. Final "Celebrating The New Sun" is the most industrial of the four tracks, with its machineries rolling and roaring alongside ghostly voices.

A special mention goes to Andreas Wahmann's production, incredibly clear and powerful, able to make you feel the immensity of space with its echoes and vibrations. This extremely-limited release is a very promising debut for Vestigial, who has all the potentials to become a reference in the dark ambient galaxy. A new sun is born!

Mit diesem Zitat begrüßt uns der sich hinter dem Pseudonym |:Y:| befindliche Künstler auf seiner MySpace Seite, auch und gerade Dark Ambient Projekte gehen mit der Zeit. Wie aus dem Nichts traf das Debüt Demo von VESTIGIAL bei mir ein, so eigentümlich der Name so eigentümlich die Aufmachung. Eine 3inch CDr mit schwarzer Unterseite in einem kleinen, kunstvoll aufgemachten Paper Digi, ein echter Augenfänger, der zudem auf 99 Stück limitiert wurde. Weitere 50 sollen noch (in einer lackierten Variante) folgen und ich wüsste nicht, was deren schnellem Abverkauf im Wege stehen könnte. Geboten wird tiefschwarzer Dark Ambient ähnlich einiger Releases der Loki Foundation, Andreas Wahnmann (FIR§T LAW, LOKI, TURBUND STURMWERK) war dann auch gleich mal für das Mastering verantwortlich. Am Klang der mit analogen und virtuellen Maschinen aufgenommenen 4 Titel gibt es dann auch mal gar nichts auszusetzen. Inhaltlich möchte ich das berühmt berüchtigte Kopfkino bemühen, welches in diesem Genre gerne zu einer Vorstellung einlädt. ,,Last Extinction Prayer" nimm mich mit in die Tiefe des Alls, wo Zeit und Raum miteinander verschmelzen und die Unendlichkeit jegliche profanen Bedürfnisse eliminiert. Im Hintergrund Gemurmel, Wortfetzen - wie die letzten Gebete einer sich selbst auflösenden Raumschiff Besatzung. Der Knall der Supernova und dann totale Dunkelheit, bevor ,,The Grey Constellation" eintritt, wir befinden uns nun in einer Parallelwelt des Schreckens, in der ein futuristischer Sauron mit harter Hand regiert. Eigentümliche Geräusche und Stimmen lösen unsere Urängste aus. Und die beiden übrigen Stücke sind nicht ,,angenehmer" ausgefallen. Endlose Schwärze gepaart mit Abwechslung: Nur scheinbar ein Widerspruch in VESTIGIALs Schaffen. Wo sonst doch oft das schnelle Gähnen regiert, hält der Meister hier 24 Minuten lang die Spannung aufrecht, wer mag, kann sich auf der MySpace Seite selbst ein Urteil bilden. Für Anhänger von beispielsweise PREDOMINANCE ein schöner Leckerbissen.

Grafica siderale e curata nei dettagli, sound potente e cristallino, dark ambient di ottima fattura e piena di elementi ben amalgamati tra loro. La nuova release Loki Foundation? No, anche se ha tutte le carte in regola per poter apparire nella ottima casa di Lipsia. Perché Vestigial ha tutto il diritto di essere affiancato accanto a gente come Inade, Herbst 9 e Predominance. Il suo lavoro di debutto mostra una capacità di assemblare suoni, samples ed effetti, senza perdere di vista la potenza, la consistenza e le atmosfere che fanno di "Aeon" un trampolino di lancio nel firmamento della dark ambient più heavy con esplosioni, campionamenti ben eseguiti ed un sound che non annoia praticamente mai tanto è ricco e variegato. Un viaggio attorno al sole. Il caldo delle fiamme si scontra con la glacialità del cosmo infinito. Da provare senza indugi.

I oto kolejny przyklad na to, iz czasem nie warto ogladac sie za siebie a tylko wziac sprawy we wlasne rece. Pochodzacy z Wloch VESTIGIAL zadebiutowal wlasnie swoim materialem wydanym tzw. wlasnym sumptem przez samego twórce. Samo wydawnictwo jest ponadto bardzo starannie i estetycznie wyprodukowane - w malej rozkladanej tekturce oraz czarnej kopercie, w której znajduje sie mala 3-calowa plytka CDR. Jak widac mozna samemu tez stworzyc interesujace i godne uwagi wydawnictwo. Muzycznie VESTIGIAL takze mnie osobiscie zainteresowal, raptem tylko 4 utwory o lacznym czasie nieco ponad 20 minut, ale dzwieki sa chwilami naprawde godnymi uwagi. Mamy tu bowiem mroczny, pelen tajemniczych odglosów dark ambient z obecnymi gdzie niegdzie nieco bardziej zgrzytliwymi fragmentami. Calosc jest naprawde niczego sobie i bardzo milo sie slucha tego materialu. Twórcy udalo sie w calkiem przyzwoity sposób stworzyc interesujaca mieszanke ambient / industrial czasem z lekka melodia w tle oraz obecnymi tu i ówdzie stukotami, lomotami oraz chwilami trzaskami. Rzadko ostatnimi czasy popadam w zachwyt przy muzyce nowych, debiutujacych projektów, ale w przypadku VESTIGIAL moje pochwaly sa jak najbardziej na miejscu. Jedynym moze mankamentem do którego moge sie nieco doczepic sa wokale, które mnie osobiscie nie zachwycily i jak dla mnie niezbyt pasuja do calosci, ale i tak jak na debiut jest calkiem niezle. Muzyka jest urozmaicona, sporo sie na tym krazku dzieje, wiec o nudzie nie moze byc mowy. Co warte podkreslenia sporym atutem wydawnictwa jest tez jakosc dzwieku - masteringu podjal sie bowiem Andreas Wahnmann z Secretlab, odpowiedzialny m.in. za produkcje chociazby Turbund Sturmwerk. Podsumowujac zatem debiut VESTIGIAL okazal sie jak najbardziej pozytywny i jestem jak najbardziej ciekaw kolejnych dokonan tego projektu, które mam nadzieje beda co najmniej na tym samym poziomie.

The debut release of this Italian project is 3"mcd featuring 4 irresistible tracks in the purest dark ambient tradition. Comparisons with some main projects like Raison D'Être, Lustmord and Bad Sector are just a reference standing for the potential of Vestigial. The listener will feel like lost in a nihilistic soundscape of horror. Tracks like "The grey constellation" and "Dagda rising" will lead you in a state of extreme angst. "Aeon" just begins where darkness stops and this is quite a long time ago that I've been under the influence of such a band! This release is strictly limited, but an absolute must have for heavy dark ambient lovers! This is a class-act!

Vestigial is a new Italian dark ambient project, and the man behind it, Peppe, is debuting with this self-produced 3". The layout is very nice, in a glossy carton sleeve with detailed dark artwork...

Musically, this is also a debut to be proud of. These four tracks have a great sound quality and contain an exciting style of dark ambient with heavier outbursts. "Last Extinction Prayer" combines synth waves with manipulated low voices, noisy parts and reverbing percussion. The other tracks contain a similar mix of elements, though each track has its own prominent emphasis, so they are quite different. The atmosphere in the music is mostly very dark, but the title "Celebrating the New Sun" suggests Vestigial also casts a balanced view on its themes. The references are mostly astronomical, except for "Dagda Rising", which is a link to one of the great gods of Celtic mythology.

In short, this is an excellent dark ambient debut, and it can easily stand the test of today's scene, attaining the quality level of many established artists. I'm looking forward to more material, and I recommend this to all lovers of non-minimalist dark ambient.
