Tsar Shate 2

Hello there,
This musical adaptation of the famous Greek play by Euripide, "The Bacchae", with a rock band and orchestra, is Tsar Shate II's latest project The action takes place in antique Greece, in the city of Thebes, where Dionysus, the god of wine and madness (among many other attributes) shows up to be recognized as such. Pentheus, the ruling king of Thebes, fails to see the deity of Dionysus and is thus punished.
Some songs include a full orchestra playing (track n# 1,2,3,7, 11). These scores were composed with the help of Gregorio Zanon, a rising composer. They are majestic, wonderful and astonishingly modern (far away from the classic "ambiance strings").
In short, The Bacchae is innovative and rare in both it's conception and harmonies. The concept of possibility building a musical play of it makes this work even more valuable.

The Bacchae

The Bacchae

Thebes. Sun rising in the way of conscience. Calm, misty, morning air. A brighter light is softly appearing. It has long been away but is now returned, full of a godly glitter, to show itself to the world. Dionysus, back from Asia, arrives in the city that bored him, followed by his cortege of Bacchantes, His aunts, who dared slander His mother whilst she was pregnant. These women didn't know that the baby, son of Zeus, was to be a God himself. In consequence, He punished them, made them step out of their reason to go in the woods, for His cult. As so escorted, Dionysus is willing to be seen by all Thebans, acclaimed and worshiped.

1. Here I Am

DIONYSOS:

I traveled many years
A long time since my
Mother gave birth to me
I'm back now
All, you'll see me now

Here I Am!
Here I Am!

When the lightning stroke
The head of my
Mother I had to leave
I'm back now
All, you'll see me now

Here I Am!
Here I Am!

It's the first city I meet
The land where my
Mother gave birth to me
I'm back now
All, you'll see me now

Here I Am!
Here I Am!

An old man appears before the walls of Thebes. Though he cannot see with his eyes, the gods have given him a higher gift: he knows of what tomorrow is made. Tyreisias, for that is his name, feels a change, feels that something overwhelming is happening, is given to the city. Therefore, as a forecaster, according to his holy assignment, he must warn and introduce to the father of the city, his equally old friend Cadmos, the new deity that is to come.

2. Can you feel what I feel?

TYREISIAS:

I'm old and blind
I'm here to find
A friend I trust
To come with us

With Him I'm young
Dance all day long
We praise again
The God that came

Can you feel what I feel?
Do you see it now?
The God is real
We're tireless
We feel no pain at all

KADMOS:

I'm glad to see
You came to me
Wise old voice
I'm filled with joy!

Where, tell me where
To go and dance
And shake our heads
Wise old friend

Can you feel what I feel?
Do you see it now?
The God is real
We're tireless
We feel no pain at all

TYREISIAS:

I'm old and blind
I'm here to find
A friend...

To these words, Pentheus, Kadmos's grandson and heir of the throne of Thebes, arrives. He returns from a long journey. Astounded by the sight of the two elder rejoicing in this Bacchic chaos, the swelled and proud young king imposes his order in a gust of sudden vanity.

3. What do I see?

PENTHEUS:

What do I see?
What do I hear?
The women seem to have gone mad
Today

I'll make them feel
The power of
The greatest king that ever was
To rule

I want you all to stop the show!
I don't want anyone to go
And join this man nobody knows!
Tadada!
You're old enough to pass away
Oh! How I wish it was today!
It's not, so all you better stay!
Tadada!

I heard the fury
Of the rites
Is the one bait he makes them bite
Aha

The father of my father
And
This crazy fool have lost their minds
Well

I want you all to stop the show!
I don't want anyone to go
And join this man nobody knows!
Tadada!
You're old enough to pass away
Oh! How I wish it was today!
It's not, so all you better stay!
Tadada!

What do I see?
What do I hear?
The women seem to have gone mad
Today

I'll make them feel
The power of
The greatest king that ever was
To rule

I want you all to stop the show!
I don't want anyone to go
And join this man nobody knows!
Tadada!
You're old enough to pass away
Oh! How I wish it was today!
It's not, so all you better stay!
Tadada!

He first blames Tyresias. According to him, he would be the one who embedded the Bacchic worship, rites and mysteries in Thebes. The wise Tyresias, amused, replies thereupon; he humbly presents him the new god, Dionysus. But may he beware: Dionysus, in opposition to him, is a God.

4. Morale

TYREISIAS:

Bathed up in a world
Of mistakes made of gold
No one ever told you
To think with your soul
Wine above the rest
Is a gift of my Lord
I am just warning
Knocking on your door.

Nasty as a bull
And as sweet as your skin
Give Him what you got
And He'll give what you need
Flowing through your body
So massively real
I am just warning
Knocking on your door.

Trying to catch your eye
I'll never see you smile
I can see the future
But I can't see anything else
Today

Watch and understand
What an old man can do
D. the God is helping us
All the way through
I would ashamed
Not to share it with you
I am just warning
Knocking on your door.

Trying to catch your eye
I'll never see you smile
I can see the future
But I can't see anything else
Today

Kadmos confirms Tyresias's words. But Pentheus, still proud and stubborn, wont be listening. Thereof, he announces that this man- he still denies the gods divine birth- must be baned. Pentheus's whim and ardour saddens the two elders. In spite of his deafness, they continue to warn him.
So does the Choir, discretely observing Pentheus's inconvenient behavior: he is not aware of the dionysiac experience...

5. Loosing the control

CHOIR:

Loosing the control
Of all the senses we are given
Is a magical
Experience you should know

For thinking we are more than Him
Is worse than death a curse a sin
It's all a matter
Of belief you ought to see
That we are crazy
So please :
"Dis-moi oui!"

The king doesn't seem
To realize his sayings
Madly he screams
At the Master of the feast

Loosing the control
Of all the senses we are given
Is a magical
Experience you should know

For thinking we are more than Him
Is worse than death a curse a sin
It's all a matter
Of belief you ought to see
That we are crazy
So please :
"Dis-moi oui!"

The sound of our lives
Laughing in the city
Bathed up in wine
Our pains are all asleep

Aiming won't let you see your feet
Peaceful life, peaceful house
Wicked thought you get troubles ahead
Life is short:
Acting strong ain't being strong

Loosing the control
Of all the senses we are given
Is a magical
Experience you should know

For thinking we are more than Him
Is worse than death a curse a sin
It's all a matter
Of belief you ought to see
That we are crazy
So please :
"Dis-moi oui!"

Take me to an island
Charmer of our soul
Take me to the river
That breeds a wonder world

Son of God takes place in every feast
Praises peace, feeds our youth
Rich or poor the wine for all He'll give
Through day and night:
He loves our joy

Loosing the control
Of all the senses we are given
Is a magical
Experience you should know

For thinking we are more than Him
Is worse than death a curse a sin
It's all a matter
Of belief you ought to see
That we are crazy
So please:
"Dis-moi oui!"

As for Pentheus, he still doesn't realize his blindness. He imprisons the Maenads and his slaves capture Dionysus Himself. One of them, precautious and respectful, reports:

6. Captured

SLAVE:

I brought you as you asked
The stranger with a mask
He didn't fight (he didn't fight!)
He didn't cry (he didn't cry!)
I said: "I'm sorry, stranger
I'm just taking orders
From a man (from a man)
For I'm a slave (I'm a slave)
I'm glad You take it with a smile
For I believe in what You are
My sweet Lord (my sweet Lord)
Sweet sweet Lord" (sweet sweet Lord)

The women were in jail
Now they broke their chains
They're running free (they're running free)
Oh you should see (oh you should see!)
They shout and jump around
They ran and left the town
For the country (for the country)
Oh you should see (oh you should see!)
My king I know that it's a crime
But what I've seen it felt so right
Oh my king (oh my king)
Frightful king (frightful king)

I'm just a slave
I ain't go no rights
I'd hate to praise
What you take as a lie
But I believe (I believe)
In the man I brought you here
He a God
That I adore
For that I'm sure (that I'm sure)

The stranger came in town
To give us light and sound
What will you do? (what will you do?)
What will you do? (what will you do?)
I leave it all to you
I leave the royal room
To sing out loud (sing out loud)
And dance around (and dance around)
For it's the thing we do
While the wine flows through
Our simple minds (our simple minds)
How we feel fine (how we feel fine)

I brought you as you asked
The stranger with a mask
He didn't fight (he didn't fight!)
He didn't cry (he didn't cry!)
I said: "I'm sorry, stranger
I'm just taking orders
From a man (from a man)
For I'm a slave (I'm a slave)
I'm glad You take it with a smile
For I believe in what You are
My sweet Lord (my sweet Lord)
Sweet sweet Lord" (sweet sweet Lord)

Ignoring the slaves' advice, Pentheus dashes in a breath to the "Stranger". Dionysus answers calmly to his rushed and violent interrogatory.

7. Interview

PENTHEUS:

Fill in the form
Faster than that!
Where are you from?
Lay it all flat!

You're good looking
But your story ends boy!
Good looking
But your story ends boy!

Take off your pants
Faster than that!
Women are sane
Not for your part

If you're smart
Then I'm a genius man
If you're smart
Then I'm a genius man

DIONYSOS:

Sometime I'll be free
Sometime you'll see me
I'm the sage and you're the fools
But you shave my head
Take my clothes away
Throw me in your jail
But I won't be crying long

PENTHEUS:

What do you know?
We want to know
Where will you go?
We want to know

You're a stranger
So you must be wrong
You're a stranger
So you must be wrong

DIONYSOS:

Sometime I'll be free
Sometime you'll see me
I'm the sage and you're the fools
But you shave my head
Take my clothes away
Throw me in your jail
But I won't be crying long

Once again, Pentheus is warned. This time, by the voice of the God in person. Nevertheless, he remains as deaf as ever. Dionysus therefore dubs him "misfortune's mate". But one-tracked mind Pentheus obtains what his human reason wanted: the God in prison. Deeper he goes in the darkness of the divine vengeance.

8. Prisoner God

DIONYSOS:

They lock me down
They say that I'm a fool
They don't know what
It's like to be so cool

They say that I'm freak
That I'm a lying thief
They lock me down here
But they will see
I will set me free

They lock me down
They say that I'm a fool

I'm not a clown
So treat me as I should
Your king is mad
He's not the one to rule

I'll brake I'll crash these walls
For you don't understand
Women out there
Calling my name
They know who I am

I'm not a clown
So treat me as I should

They lock me down
They say that I'm a fool
They don't know what
It's like to be so cool

But the God has been offended enough. As soon as Pentheus turns his back, his palace collapses. In a roar, Dionysus is free and calls to Him his Maenads, these wild women.

9. Wild Women

DIONYSOS:

Hey you! Wild women
Get up and dance!
Yeah you! Wild women
Don't you be scared!

I'm all right
Back all night
Rejoice wild women
For the God you've chosen
Got me out
Here am I
To lead you somewhere...
You've never been there before.

Why you? Wild women
Why fear a man?
Bless you! Wild women
Don't be ashamed

I fell fine
See my light
Rejoice wild women
For the God you've chosen
Lit a fire
In the house
The wall are shaking
My heart is burning for you

Who would be your keeper
If I died?
I will live forever
For your sight
For your sight

Well you! Wild women
What do I hear?
I feel, wild women
Somebody's here

It's not right
To feel sad
Rejoice wild women
For the God you've chosen
Faces all
Doesn't fall
Ain't it clever
Sweet and sour for you!

After a short relation of his flight, the God reassures them. Pentheus was so full of his illusions. He pushed the God's wrath to its extremity: in a blaze of light, the full power of the Bacchic spread, destroying everything around, setting free the Maenads. Thus, they meet Dionysus up in the mountains where they will be at peace, in the wilderness, for the great Bacchanal. A slave witnessed the scene:

10. We saw them (Slave song 2)

SLAVE:

The sun was shining
Warming up the earth
Uphill I saw the women
And I heard
A scream of madness
A scream of life
A scream to wake them up
From slumbers in the sky
A source of wine
Was flowing by
I felt it was there at the right place and time.

I brought my friends
Afraid of what I'd seen
We thought of hiding
To capture all the queens
We waited long
We waited far
We were amazed to see
The wonders of the wild
But then we failed
We're not blame
The God was acting with a power so strange

We saw them dancing (dancing!)
We heard them screaming (screaming!)
We saw them killing all our bulls
Without a fright
Their silver wings
To fly so high
We heard them singing all their songs
Beneath the sun

Just like an army
Burning up the town
I swear to god
We had to run back down
I never worry
I never cry
I never dance behind
The shadow of my lies
But then again
It's not the same
The God was acting with a power so grand

We saw them dancing (dancing!)
We heard them screaming (screaming!)
We saw wiping all the blood
That they had spilled
The snakes were licking
Their apple cheeks
We heard them singing all their songs
Beneath the sun

To these words, Pentheus enrages. He wants to go up immediately to restore Thebes's right order. The night of his awareness is now near. A brief encounter with Him seals his madness. Dionysus will gently start to play with his senses and mind. Pentheus follows the slope.

11. Did you ever wear a dress? (my king)

PENTHEUS:

I'm on fire!
Burning rage!
All the women:
Gone insane!
I don't want
Explanations!
Feed our hills
With their blood!

DIONYSOS:

There's still a chance
To end this calmly
I'll bring the women
To you then you'll see...

PENTHEUS:

You're only trying
To trick me now!
Only trying to trick me now!
Only...

You've arranged
With your God
And you try now
To go on
What if I
Went and see
What you're hiding
From me?

DIONYSOS:

I don't know why
You want to see this
You're taking pleasure
Knowing things you hate

PENTHEUS:

Hiding? Never!
So I'll face them all!
Hiding? Never!
So I'll face them all!
Hiding...never...!

DIONYSOS:

Did you ever wear a dress
My king?
It's a price to pay to be
Uphill
I'm here to assist
Don't try to resist
I carry your fate in my hand

PENTHEUS:

I'm on fire!
Burning rage!
All the women:
Gone insane!
I don't want
Explanations!
Feed our hills
With their blood!

DIONYSOS:

There's still a chance
To end this calmly
I'll bring the women
To you then you'll see...

PENTHEUS:

You're only trying
To trick me now!
Only trying to trick me now!
Only...trying to...trick me now!

For Pentheus should've been more precautious. Listening to His irresistible voice, the young king believes everything that is said. He will now go to the mountains to join the Maenads. In a ridiculous dress, in the midst of his delirium. The God guides Pentheus out of town. And when they reach the Bacchanal, He peacefully leads him to his mother, Agave, wild Maenad. But, at this point, Pentheus knows. It is to late, the Offended must have his revenge.

12. Two suns in the sky

PENTHEUS:

Two suns in the sky
Two cities alike
A bull is leading me
Towards my destiny

I'm dressed like a girl
Arrange all these curls for me
You'll be my dresser
Now make me feel pretty!

I feel like I could carry mountains
I'd rather show myself
But then again you're right...
Then again you're right...
I'll stay...

So bring me to them
Or bring me to death
I'll show before my men
What I intend to dare

I feel like I could carry mountains
I'd rather show myself
But then again you're right...
Then again you're right...

It's so much better to hide
And avoid a big surprise
So much better to hide
When you're scared

She'll carry me home
My mother and all...
They'll all be watching me
What I deserve to be...

Disguised and bewildered, Pentheus sees what was not meant to be seen. The minute they spot him, the Bacchantes pounce and tear him to shred. Dionysus, amused by this gruesome spectacle, makes them believe that Pentheus wants their death. The contrary arrives: begging them mercy, crying piteously, Pentheus is brutally ripped up. Agave, his mother is the wildest of them all. At last, among the tatters, she grasps his head, still believing it a lions. Meanwhile, Kadmos rushed up from Thebes to verify if the rumors are true. When he sees his own daughter Agave with Pentheus's head in hands, he tries desperately to awake her from stupor:

13. Realize

AGAVE:

I'm so proud
So sure I
Have killed with
All my heart
It seems a song will arise
From stories I will tell
Come along admire the prize
I'm holding in my hand
A lion's head
I killed today

I, the Queen
Like in dreams
Could fly
Above our land
I feel I'm granted with
A power made of light
Share with me the pride of being
The mother of a king
Bring out your friends
Let's feast again
Again...

KADMOS:

I have carried out the body
Of your one son
I hear the story you are telling me
You're wrong
If you'd see lies you're spreading
Then you would cry
Lift up your eyes and see the blue of
The sky
And realize
Realize
Realize...

AGAVE:

How the sky
Seems so bright!
It seems
To clear my mind
In my hand am I wrong? Am I right?
Is the head of my one son!
I realize I see the lies
I held as true
It's time for us
To leave
And far away.
