Oranges, honey and the hook shot. Those were the three secrets to basketball greatness according to my Papou (the Greek word for grandfather). There we were, my first cousin Greg and I, taking basketball lessons from a man who doesn't talk about three-pointers, slam dunks or defense. "You eat the oranges and the honey before the game... and you throw the hook," he would say. My cousin would throw the 3. And 9 times out of 10, he'd sink it in-spite of my grandfather's insistence on a style of shooting that was considered outdated and uncool.
