About

Umbriel Rising is the Electronica/Electro project of musician/producer m.j.brown.

m.j.brown has been actively involved in playing and recording music since the late 1980's. A completely self taught musician, who can barely read a note of music yet has the intuitiveness to be able to pick up musical instruments and make something of a reasonable and variable sound with them (notice the use of the word 'good' has been omitted so far!). Keyboards, guitar, bass, programming, and random bashing of objects for pleasure and sampling are a specialty. Grew up on Tascam cassette portastudios and 2 track reel tape for mastering, through the world of 8 track reel and ADAT, computer recording was an interest but until about 2005 was not the main attraction, that 1/2" reel tape was kept alive waaaaay longer than it ought to have been ! Although I dabbled in Cubase and Sonar in the early millenium, it wasn't until Cubase SX3 came around that I made a serious decision to fully embrace the digital recording age and the world of plugins and now I predominantly am a fan and user of Ableton Live 7 Suite.

Most Umbriel Rising tracks are composed as fresh ideas using modern sequencing software and computer recording/mixing and mastering processes. Umbriel Rising is electronica, with a blend of rock/funk/progressive house/techno and old skool synth music, as composed by the likes of Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream etc. For the most part it is performed using real instrumentation played by m.j.brown, with modern sequencing software and (to a lesser extent) some sampling and off the wall modern production techniques.

I love Ableton Live - Live loud and proud !

It is not necessarily a cool thing for someone producing alternative/rock music to admit that they love gear that is pigeon holed as for DJs and Techno freaks, but Ableton Live has been the most important musical thing to happen to me. For those who don't know, I …
