I don't know where any of this comes from. I have no idea until I actually start, and then the music seems to dictate the direction. Sometimes it's the artwork or a title. Other times that comes later. For this, our third participating effort in the RPM challenge, the name and art came first. The music still dictated the sound and eventually the two just merged and seemed to make sense.
My friend Richard Truby, an artist/musician in his own right, contributed the name when he commented on the photo that now graces the cover of our new record. He said how it reminded him of Intellectual Graffiti, and that was it, I knew that it was going to be the next Vivian Circle record. Thanks Richard!
The music seemed to come from somewhere darker. I was grappling with (still am) some serious issues as we do from time to time. And the idea for a chamber music sounding record just popped into my head. So I warmed up the keyboard and decided to limit the instrumentation to just a few. Piano was going to drive the songs and then I would include Harp, Strings and some horns courtesy of my virtual friends in the Champagne Socialists.
The result is still in the process of becoming what it shall become...if that makes any sense. And I will try and stay faithful to the idea..until Feb. 28th!
All the best
