When I was the last boy on earth
I went and sat on your
lawn and watched the astronauts mill by
they trampled all your mothers flowers
pressed the petals in the
soft soil and tracked it on the porch
they called the swat team
for the barricade and made it into the
kitchenette before all the guns went off
your silhouette flashed in the window
against the pale and lacy
curtains that we used to push away and peer through
I left when they took you outside
and propped you up against the
van taking detailed pictures of the powder burns
I built an engine out of parts
that I found out in the
garage and in the weeds of the backyard
I fired it up and gripped the pipe
between my teeth getting
all the exhaust I need to tell you how I let you down.
and told you about Harry Smith
And also how Orion ended
up on the wrong side of the sky again
