I finally finished GTA IV tonight, lets just say that the game is very long, it took me around 25 hours to beat the main-storyline. So I thought I would write this review about one of 2008's biggest games.
(I have owned the game since the release date on April 29th, but I have been playing multiplayer alot more than the singleplayer campaign for the past few months, so thats the reason that I haven't finished the main campaign until now.)
GTA IV REVIEW
Gameplay: GTA IV defiantly offers up a new style of gameplay compared to the earlier GTA games. The driving is more realistic, but that's only if you can get used to the physics engine. The shooting system is alot easier to get used to than the other GTA titles. While many of the elements that were in San Andreas and Vice City have been removed, the elements of that remain work well for the games overall realistic values. The game is the first to use Euphoria, which is a AI System that helps the NPCs and the Player Characters have a sense of being, in other words it make the characters seem alive. They will react to falling down the stairs differently each time, getting hit by a car won't be the same every time, and being shot will show the impact on the character models. I enjoy the realism that GTA IV portrays, but at times it can fall short of realistic.
Graphics: Lets just say that GTA IV isn't the greatest looking game this generation, but for the size and amount of stuff going on screen, you can tell that they had to compromise the overall graphics just so that the game could run smoothly. Some of the character models are very detailed; others just look like Rockstar ran out of ideas for characters. Liberty City is very big and very detailed (almost exact copy of New York City), while Liberty City isn't as interactive as the cities in Assassin's Creed or Crackdown, it is still a city full of life and many places to explore. The cars are just as detailed as everything else, dirt and blood gather on the car, but to fix that you can either go to a 'Pay and Spray' of go through the 'Car Wash' to get rid of the dirt or blood. The explosions are beautiful, and the damage shown a vehicle is outstanding, the character models show where they are hit by bullets and will burn if scorched by fire. As I stated earlier that graphics of GTA IV aren't exactly the best, but it is what you can expect of a game of this size and magnitude.
Story: What can I say about the story, its very long and very fast paced at times. From what I can tell it is in a 'Post 9/11 Liberty City.' Niko comes to America in search of a better life and trying to escape the problems he had in his country. His time in America soon becomes the exact opposite of what Niko wanted to find. It eventually turns into a story of betrayal, killing of specific people, some more betrayal, gang battles, revenge, drug dealing, more killing of specific people, more revenge, more drug dealing, some more betrayal, a big wedding, and the final kill. All of which ends the pain of Niko's past. Overall the story is very good if you can understand what is happening , amongst the chaos. This story did not have a dull moment in it at all. Overall a very good story, while it may not be original, in which its setting works very well to make it seem real.
Sound: The audio suite used in GTA IV is huge and very diverse. The voice acting is topnotch, possibly the best voice acting ever seen in a videogame to date. The overall realism of the game is brought with the games audio.
Lasting Appeal: Well its been almost 8 months since the release of GTA IV, and I am still playing it. Lets just say that the multiplayer is very addicting, especially Free Roam with: The Nordaj. I can see this game going back into my 360 again and again, at least until the next GTA is released, and the promise of DLC coming soon really helps keep the game running strong.
