Originally from rural New England and now living in New Mexico, William Fowler Collins (b.1974) is a musician whose work explores and synthesizes both musical and extramusical elements. Improvisation, field recordings, electric guitar, lap steel guitar, laptop computer, processed recordings, microcassette tape recorders, and home-made electronic devices all play roles in the creating, performing, and recording of his music.
In 2004 Collins graduated from Mills College, with an MFA in Electronic Music and Recording Media where he studied with Fred Frith, Annie Gosfield, Alvin Curran, Maggi Payne, Chris Brown, and Pauline Oliveros.
He has performed throughout the San Francisco Bay Area at venues including Yerba Buena Center For The Arts (on laptop electronics for live improvisation with Matmos as part of their residency in 2003), The Headlands Center For The Arts (playing guitar in Aero-Mic'd), San Francisco Art Institute (solo guitar/laptop electronics, opening for Matmos), Café Du Nord (playing guitar in Mire, opening for The Brightblack Morning Light), Folk Yeah Festival 2005 in Big Sur(playing guitar in Mire. Reviews/Interviews: http://wfowlercollins.ath.cx/music_press.htm
"Collins' textured soundscapes have ambient and noise elements, but he manages to keep just the right amount of activity going. His improvisation is assured and restrained. " -Gridface.com
"Collins composed a pair of untitled dreams, both of which mix guitar into a rough audio terrain, something along the lines of what Ennio Morricone might have done had he studied contemporary music at Mills College in the early 21st century, as did Collins." -Disquiet.com

"We all admire the spangled acrobat with classical grace meticulously walking his tight rope in the talcum light; but how much rarer art there is in the sagging rope expert wearing scarecrow clothes and impersonating a grotesque drunk! I should know." (Vladimir Nabokov)
