Have we become citizens of the bubble?

I've been reading a lot of books on church planting at the moment, particularly those that talk about reaching the emerging generation, and how to react to todays culture etc - tonight I was reading a section of Dan Kimball's 'The Like Jesus, But Not The Church' and boy, was this a slap in the face to us all (myself direly included)...

(he points out the common phases of a Christians transforming from an excited missionary into a citizen of the bubble - this section is taken from phase 3: we become a part of the Christian bubble)

As we slowly withdraw from ongoing relationships with those outside the church and focus on relationships with those inside the church, something happens. Once, it was more natural and even exciting to share life with people at work or at school, with relatives, or with neighbours. But slowly we begin to see evangelism as something the church does, primarily through events. We get more excited about going overseas to the mission field on summer trips than about the mission field we live in every day. We start to see evangelism as inviting people to go to a church, where the pastor will do the evangelising and explain Christianity, instead of spending time with people and talking with them and being the church to them. During this phase, we stop praying daily for those who don't know Jesus and instead pray for our church's latest building project or latest program. Other than maybe at an office Christmas party that we have to go to, we rarely ever hang out with non-Christian friends or go to movies with them. For the most part, only Christians are in our circle of peers.

Are we loving people outside of the church, befriending them, getting to know them?... I for one certainly know that I need to do this far better. For we know that Jesus most definitely did not spend all of his time with just his followers - he cared about the lost, and his heart broke for them, because he knew them.

Agape.

God has been challenging me lately with how to love others, and how VITAL that is to being a Christian. I was looking at the three types of love...

- Eros love - known as 'erotic love', is based on strong romantic feelings towards another.
- Philos love - a love based on friendship between two people who share a mutual, 'give-and take' relationship.
- Agape love - unconditional love that is always giving and impossible to take or be a taker. It devotes total commitment to seek your highest best no matter how anyone may respond. This form of love is totally selfless and does not change whether the love given is returned or not. This is the original and only true form of love.

Imagine if we all had agape love for one another...

But then again, I guess that would be heaven.

27 'But I say to you that hear, Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, 28 bless those who curse you, pray for those who abuse you. 29 To him who strikes you on the cheek, offer the other also; and from him who takes away your coat do not withhold even your shirt. 30 Give to every one who begs from you; and of him who takes away your goods do not ask them again. 31 And as you wish that men would do to you, do so to them.

32 'If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners love those who love them. 33 And if you do good to those who do good to you, what credit is that to you? For even sinners do the same. 34 And if you lend to those from whom you hope to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners, to receive as much again. 35 But love your enemies, and do good, and lend, expecting nothing in return; and your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High; for he is kind to the ungrateful and the selfish. 36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

37 'Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; 38 give, and it will be given to you; good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For the measure you give will be the measure you get back.'
Luke  6:27-38

I will never stop being amazed at how God loves me with this kind of love. perfect & unfailing. No matter how many times I am reminded, it still blows me away.

A choice that brought me to tears.

I have been investigating various Christian charity organisations lately so that God will lead me to choose one or two to commit to supporting, rather than just sporadically giving to random organisations when I feel a certain passion to do so. So I was reading into the work of Compassion (www.compassion.com.au), I clicked on 'Sponsor a child' and let Compassion randomly select one for me because I could not bare the thought of having to choose... but I was not so fortunate, the choice of about ten or so children sprung onto the screen, some smiling, some with such deep sorrow in their eyes, from all across the globe, almost half had been waiting for sponsorship for months and are therefore labelled as 'priority children' - but even then, there are five beautiful and longing faces that stare at you. This simple vision brought me to tears, why cant we help them all!?! All of these children need help, why do some get left and others get chosen, I don't get how this system is supposed to work but I just can not comprehend the hugeness of the need around the world and at times like these, I feel utterly helpless.

14What good is it, my brothers, if a man claims to have faith but has no deeds? Can such faith save him? 15Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. 16If one of you says to him, "Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed," but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it? 17In the same way, faith by itself, if it is not accompanied by action, is dead.

18But someone will say, "You have faith; I have deeds."
      Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by what I do.

Grace beyond understanding & joy like no other.

5It is not to angels that he has subjected the world to come, about which we are speaking. 6But there is a place where someone has testified:
   "What is man that you are mindful of him,
      the son of man that you care for him?
7You made him a little lower than the angels;
      you crowned him with glory and honor
    8 and put everything under his feet."

    In putting everything under him, God left nothing that is not subject to him. Yet at present we do not see everything subject to him. 9But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death, so that by the grace of God he might taste death for everyone.

10In bringing many sons to glory, it was fitting that God, for whom and through whom everything exists, should make the author of their salvation perfect through suffering. 11Both the one who makes men holy and those who are made holy are of the same family. So Jesus is not ashamed to call them brothers. 12He says,
   "I will declare your name to my brothers;
      in the presence of the congregation I will sing your praises." 13And again,
   "I will put my trust in him." And again he says,
   "Here am I, and the children God has given me."

14Since the children have flesh and blood, he too shared in their humanity so that by his death he might destroy him who holds the power of death--that is, the devil-- 15and free those who all their lives were held in slavery by their fear of death. 16For surely it is not angels he helps, but Abraham's descendants. 17For this reason he had to be made like his brothers in every way, in order that he might become a merciful and faithful high priest in service to God, and that he might make atonement for the sins of the people. 18Because he himself suffered when he was tempted, he is able to help those who are being tempted.

1Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. 2He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. 3Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast.

Hebrews 2:5-3:6

Just as there were many who were appalled at him --
his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man
and his form marred beyond human likeness (Isaiah 52:14)

God of the earth.

A few weeks ago I bought part two of the BBC series, Planet Earth. I had remembered seeing parts of it a while back on Ellen and being astounded at the camera work. My current view is that I FULLY endorse these DVDs, they seem to be the most edifying piece of television I choose to watch these days. As I watch, with jaw open, my view of God is enlarged by the second. There is so much about this world that I do not know, and earth isn't even close to the beginning, but I wont open that can of worms at this moment. The way God has crafted this earth is ridiculously astounding, it honestly takes my breath away. The detail involved is so far beyond any human understanding, and yet it just works, it not only works, but it works perfectly. And to think, all he had to do was speak...

In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light. (Gen 1:1-3)

I could write out the entire first chapter of Genisis 1 here and in itself, it is unbelievable, but when you watch something like planet earth, travel to another country or even just go outside of your home, you realise how much more was involved and how genius our Lord is. For example, when God sad "Let there be light," he was creating something which effects every single living thing on this planet in an incredibly intricate way. God goes above and beyond, for example, light could have been made as just a simple white light source, but no, God decided to make light to be made up of seven different colours!

Watch this, and imagine God creating it all with a mere breath of speech. What kind of God can create such beauty??

"As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.

As the rain and the snow come down from heaven, and do not return to it without watering the earth and making it bud and flourish, so that it yields seed for the sower and bread for the eater, so is my word that goes out from my mouth:
It will not return to me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the purpose for which I sent it.

You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace;
the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands.

Instead of the thornbush will grow the pine tree, and instead of briers the myrtle will grow.
This will be for the LORD's renown, for an everlasting sign, which will not be destroyed."

(Isaiah 55:9-13)
