In 2007 I was approached by email to join the Polabeat project which was a compilation of polish music remixed or covered by various signed and unsigned artists. I was provided with a Polish Folk song to remix which I agreed to do so once I was confident that copy-right clearance existed. Although my work was highly regarded by those running the project it was never used as the project was cancelled as few artists were able to meet the deadline. I am not surprised as the organisers were only able to provide finished works to remix, there were no seperate accapellas ( vocals seperate from the music ), sound bites from seperate tracks or instrument solos. There is still limited technology for seperating vocals from instruments, even then they have to be panned absolutely central in the original music for them to be extracted. The Polish music did not have these characteristics. I had to find sections where no vocals were sung and then find a usable loop. Having resampled the loop suitable for a 140 bpm tempo I had to estimate the original musical key using my ear and pitch detection software. Once this had been acheived I was able to re-create some of the vocals with my voice and Magix formant correction to create a vocoder like affect. The rest was simply me finding melodys and harmonys on my X2 synthesiser and sampling them.
