A long missive arrived just today,
I kept the envelope and threw the rest away,
Three continents in twenty-two days,
Sometimes it's not what you write that has the most to say,
Oh, first just a splash,
Oh, of my benzine bath,
Yeah, then the magnifying glass,
Your secrets revealed at long last,
A sad epistle professing your love,
But circumspection's always fit me just like a glove,
Your words they failed to kindle a spark,
I check the weave, I check the watermark,
Oh, first we drop it in the cup,
Oh, then the tweezers lift it up,
Yeah, then the fluoroscope,
I'll reveal your design, I'll crack your code,
Serrated edges just like your love,
Residue like a tattoo a tacky gum,
A palimpsest, I read your real intent in the faded ink,
And when I peel the stamp in a rage,
It tears the page,
A long letter arrived just today,
It said you love me but your stationary gives you away,
You may be clever, just not stunningly so,
Still you're common and oh so predictable,
The plate number's typical, It's nothing rare,
The most ardent collector couldn't bother to care,
If this is cunning then you're sly like a fox,
You stick a stamp to your lies, then you drop them in a box,
